MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) is not bothered by a petition challenging the Supreme Court (SC) to issue temporary restraining order to stop the task force from imposing quarantine restrictions on senior citizens amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, Malaca\u00f1ang said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe IATF cannot be bothered by this suit,\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser.<\/p>\n

Roque, also spokesperson of IATF-EID, said the retired government official has the right to file the petition that also questioned the IATF-EID\u2019s authority to pass mandatory policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cKarapatan niya iyan, pero naninindigan po ang<\/em>\u00a0IATF\u00a0na iyong<\/em>\u00a0prohibition\u00a0po sa galaw ng mga<\/em>\u00a0(That\u2019s his rights but the IATF remains firm that prohibition on the movement of) seniors is borne by science and medicine,\u201d he said. \u201cSa buong daigdig po, ang mga tinatamaan at namamatay sa<\/em>\u00a0Covid-19\u00a0ay ang mga<\/em>\u00a0seniors\u00a0at mayroong<\/em>\u00a0(Worldwide, those infected and died due to Covid-19 were seniors and there are) comorbidities, and that is a scientific fact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roque, a former law professor, said one of the acknowledged powers of the state is the police power.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt ang basehan po sa pag<\/em>-exercise\u00a0ng<\/em>\u00a0police power\u00a0ay iyong pangalagaan ang kalusugan mismo ng mga<\/em>\u00a0seniors (And the basis of exercising police power is to protect the health of the senior citizens),\u201d Roque said. \u201cSo\u00a0itong kaso po, bagama\u2019t hindi natin pinapangunahan ang<\/em>\u00a0Supreme Court,\u00a0tingin ko po ay wala pong mangyayari diyan<\/em>\u00a0(So this case, though we are not interfering on Supreme Court, I think, will not prosper happen).\u201d<\/p>\n

He reminded the petitioner that prohibiting the senior citizens from going outside of their residence except for work and to procure necessities \u201cis for your own benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is to protect your lives amidst the proven fact\u00a0po na ang mga namamatay sa<\/em>\u00a0Covid-19,\u00a0karamihan po<\/em>\u00a0(that many of those who died Covid-19 are), senior citizens,\u201d Roque said.<\/p>\n

Aside from the retired government official who filed the petition on September 14, a group of jeepney drivers on Tuesday also challenged the SC to rule against the government\u2019s preference for modernized jeepneys in the gradual return of public transport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
