(File Photo: Kon Karampelas\/Unsplash)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0The National Privacy Commission (NPC) on Thursday said it initiated a \u201cdeeper probe\u201d into Facebook\u2019s recent removal of \u201cinauthentic\u201d accounts with alleged ties to China and the Philippines\u2019 military and police.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, NPC Commissioner Raymund Liboro said the investigation will look into Facebook\u2019s \u201cpreventive actions,\u201d noting that it threatens the privacy and security of Filipino netizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacebook\u2019s proposed preventive actions regarding the proliferation of suspicious accounts as such activities on the platform continue to threaten the personal data privacy and other security-related rights of its Filipino users,\u201d Liboro said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the investigation will look into Facebook\u2019s removal of two separate networks \u2014 each allegedly originating in China and the Philippines, respectively \u2014 that violated the platform\u2019s policy against \u201ccoordinated inauthentic behavior (CIB) on behalf of a foreign or government entity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook claimed that the removal of the Filipino network resulted in 57 deleted Facebook accounts, 31 pages, and 20 Instagram accounts due to \u201cforeign or government interference\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Liboro said an invitation was sent to Facebook to appear before the NPC as part of its investigation and asked the company to comply with the country\u2019s \u201claws, rules, and regulations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial media platforms shall elevate their community standards to a level that adequately protects the data privacy rights of Filipino data subjects and rights to free speech and expression,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the NPC in 2018 has looked into an exploit on Facebook that allowed the \u201cView As\u201d feature to extract a user\u2019s access token without consent.<\/p>\n<p>The past probe, he said, resulted in Facebook receiving an order to comply with the provisions of the Data Privacy Act of 2012, \u201csuch as establishing a dedicated help desk for Filipino data subjects on privacy related matters\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is incumbent on us at the National Privacy Commission to step up our action especially on platforms, like Facebook that is considered as one of the biggest holders and processors of personal data,\u201d Liboro said.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook cybersecurity policy chief, announced the company\u2019s shutdown of over 100 fake accounts that criticized activist and communist groups.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the network was most active in 2019 when discussions about the Anti-Terrorism Act were at its peak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0\u2013\u00a0The National Privacy Commission (NPC) on Thursday said it initiated a \u201cdeeper probe\u201d into Facebook\u2019s recent removal of \u201cinauthentic\u201d accounts &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":269747,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1145,16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-269746","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headline","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-raymond-carl-dela-cruz","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/269746","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=269746"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/269746\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":269748,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/269746\/revisions\/269748"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/269747"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=269746"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=269746"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=269746"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
