Its themes of underemployment, decaying cities and youth disenfranchisement, combined with a mood of uncertainty about the future, presciently capture this moment.<\/p>\n<p>A single player adventure game, the narrative of Night in the Woods begins with the protagonist, anthropomorphic cat-punk Mae, dropping out of university for mental health reasons and returning to her rural hometown. Her father forgets to pick her up from the bus stop, so Mae finds herself walking home through the dense, shadowy woods.<\/p>\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u17kM8oSz3k?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0\" width=\"440\" height=\"260\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p>The player navigates Mae through a two-dimensional landscape, including the remnants of an old playground. It sits in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/z4k4kx\/night-in-the-woods-is-an-affecting-portrait-of-a-rust-belt-community\">America\u2019s Rust Belt<\/a>, a once booming industrial hub that has fallen into financial hardship as local resources dry up. As the player sends Mae exploring, they can poke through the nooks and crannies in Possum Springs and witness Mae\u2019s complicated emotional reactions to what she finds there.<\/p>\n<p>She mourns the ruin of a parade float from her childhood, now left to be eaten by rats in a storage room. She sneers at the war monument in the centre of town. Or you may find yourself, like Mae, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.domain.com.au\/news\/one-in-four-australian-adult-children-move-back-home-new-data-shows-955703\/\">returning home and living with your parents<\/a>. Financial security, good health, and personal agency feel just out of reach.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nRead more:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/no-festivals-no-schoolies-young-people-are-missing-out-on-vital-rites-of-passage-during-covid-145097\">No festivals, no schoolies: young people are missing out on vital rites of passage during COVID<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>An in-between space<\/h2>\n<p>As traditional markers of maturity, like buying your first home or settling into a solid career, <a href=\"https:\/\/daily.jstor.org\/queer-time-the-alternative-to-adulting\/\">become less and less accessible<\/a>, the borders between \u201cyouth\u201d and \u201cadulthood\u201d are increasingly blurry.<\/p>\n<p>This has been true for a long time, but Covid conditions have highlighted the strange in-between space many members of the millennial and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Generation_Z\">Z generations<\/a> occupy.<\/p>\n<p>Mae\u2019s anxiety is not pandemic-related, but as Possum Springs crumbles around her and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U7gAoTWFTwY\">her dreams become increasingly haunting<\/a>, she becomes an emblem of her generation.<\/p>\n<p>Through Mae, Night in the Woods asks: what will the future hold, if we can\u2019t possibly go back to the way things were before? What if we can\u2019t rely on the adults, who we assumed had it all figured out and would always protect us? And what is an adult, anyway?<\/p>\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U7gAoTWFTwY?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0\" width=\"440\" height=\"260\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p>The eventual villains of the piece are a group of old timers who are all too willing to hurt vulnerable people in the name of returning Possum Springs to its former prosperity. This is part of the game\u2019s Gothic horror element, but it is, in a way, also one of its most realistic aspects.<\/p>\n<p>Mae\u2019s loss of faith in the protective authority of adults, the financial stress and disenfranchisement of her friends, and the overall aura of uncertainty make Night in the Woods a raw and harrowing picture of 21st century youth.<\/p>\n<p>But the game also has a hopeful ending, even if things remain shaky. Maybe it is not as simple as saving the day and defeating a great evil. Maybe things will never go back to \u201cThe Good Ol\u2019 Days\u201d. But Mae and her friends have each other, and are ready to face the uncertain future with a rebellious fire in their hearts.<\/p>\n<p>The game ends with Mae ready to keep going, which is no mean feat.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
