SIMEON CELI JR.\/PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong> \u2013 Select Cabinet members held a meeting on Saturday night to tackle the recommendation of medical front-liners to implement enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila until August 15 to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, Malaca\u00f1ang said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExecutive Secretary Salvador Medialdea convened a meeting tonight, August 1, with key members of the Cabinet,\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press statement.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was held the same day when President Rodrigo Duterte directed members of the Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to reconsider upgrading the community quarantine status in Metro Manila to ECQ, the most stringent quarantine classification imposed in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Roque said he and his fellow secretaries, Wendel Avisado (Budget), Ramon Lopez (Trade), Francisco Duque (Health), Eduardo A\u00f1o (Interior), and Delfin Lorenzana (Defense), attended the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Also present during the meeting were National Task Force (NTF) Covid-19 chief implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., NTF Covid-19 deputy chief implementer, and testing czar Vince Dizon and Health Undersecretary and treatment czar Leopoldo Vega, Roque said.<\/p>\n<p>Roque said Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Michael Ong, Presidential Assistant for Foreign Affairs Robert Borje, and Senate health committee chairperson Christopher Lawrence Go were also included in the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Roque said the Cabinet members&#8217; recommendation on Metro Manila&#8217;s fate will also be submitted to Duterte right after the meeting for the President&#8217;s review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is to address the concerns of the medical community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte on Thursday placed Metro Manila under general community quarantine (GCQ) from August 1 to 15.<\/p>\n<p>The new quarantine classification in Metro Manila came despite Malaca\u00f1ang\u2019s previous statement that a stricter community quarantine might be implemented in the country\u2019s metropolis due to unabated increase in Covid-19 cases.<\/p>\n<p>In an August 1 letter supported by other health organizations, Philippine College of Physicians president Mario Panaligan relayed to the Duterte government the medical workers\u2019 appeal to reimpose ECQ in Metro Manila, the epicenter of the pandemic in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Panaligan said health professionals proposed the imposition of ECQ in Metro Manila until August 15 because they are already \u201ctired\u201d and they believed it is the proper time to \u201crefine our pandemic control strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the Department of Health logged new record-high 4,963 new infections, jacking up the tally to 98,232.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 93 new recoveries were likewise reported, raising the total to 65,265.<\/p>\n<p>Deaths, on the other hand, rose to 2,039 with 17 additional fatalities, 13 of whom passed away in July and four in June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA \u2013 Select Cabinet members held a meeting on Saturday night to tackle the recommendation of medical front-liners to implement &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":263765,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1145,16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-263764","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headline","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-ruth-abbey-gita-carlos","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/263764","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=263764"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/263764\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":263766,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/263764\/revisions\/263766"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/263765"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=263764"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=263764"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=263764"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
