ROBINSON NI\u00d1AL JR.\/PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Despite the spike in confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the country, Malaca\u00f1ang on Wednesday said the fight against the novel coronavirus remains \u201csuccessful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said there are improvements in the government\u2019s Covid-19 response because the country\u2019s mortality rate is \u201cstill way below\u201d the global average.<\/p>\n<p>Roque made the statement in an interview with CNN Philippines\u2019 The Source, when quizzed if he believes the government is failing to address the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been rather successful because we have limited mortality rate, and in the end, that\u2019s what matters \u2013 how many people perished because of the pandemic,\u201d he said. \u201cThe mortality rate is below world average. We\u2019re more or less around two percent. So, we can\u2019t say we\u2019ve been an absolute failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his fifth and penultimate State-of-the-Nation Address delivered on Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte presented his administration\u2019s plans on how to help the country recover from the Covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Critics, however, claimed that Duterte failed to present clear plans for the country\u2019s recovery from Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Touting the effectiveness of the government\u2019s Covid-19 interventions, Roque said the implementation of measures against the novel coronavirus has prevented the surge in cases to up to 3.5 million, as predicted by the University of the Philippines (UP) OCTA research group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep telling the people that do not forget that the same UP OCTA research group, that is so accurately forecasting the numbers of Covid-19, forecasted it should have been 3.5 million and even more by now, [had we] not resort to the steps that we did,\u201d Roque said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018100%\u2019 cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Roque also believed that the country\u2019s fight against Covid-19 is successful because of the cooperation of majority of Filipinos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are achieving great stride,\u201d he said. \u201cSo people, let\u2019s give ourselves credit because it\u2019s not just government that succeeded. It\u2019s the Filipino people [who] succeeded to be where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roque, however, acknowledged that the government needs the \u201c100 percent\u201d cooperation of all Filipinos to stop the spread of Covid-19 in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He reiterated that the public needs to continue following the government\u2019s call to observe strict physical distancing, wash their hands, and use face masks to prevent the further transmissions of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s still not [observed] 100 percent.
