(<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=81113139\">Photo By U.S. Department of State from United States &#8211; United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Raab Signs Secretary Pompeo&#8217;s Guestbook, Public Domain<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>LONDON<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The British government on Monday suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong in the wake of China imposing a controversial and sweeping security law on the semi-autonomous region.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told parliament \u201cwe have agreed to suspend the extradition treaty immediately and indefinitely,\u201d describing the move as \u201ca reasonable and proportionate response to China\u2019s failure to live up to those international obligations with respect to Hong Kong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move follows Canada and Australia already scrapping their extradition treaties with Hong Kong, with the US set to do the same in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government has already offered around 3 million Hong Kongers a path to British citizenship in response to the new security law.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking earlier in the day, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: \u201cThere is a balance here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to be pushed into a position of becoming a knee-jerk sinophobe on every issue, somebody who is automatically anti-China,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut we do have serious concerns. We have concerns about the treatment of the Uighur minority obviously, about the human rights abuses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cChina is a giant factor of geopolitics, it\u2019s going to be a giant factor in our lives and in the lives of our children and grandchildren.
