{"id":260831,"date":"2020-07-08T00:42:58","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T04:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=260831"},"modified":"2020-07-08T00:42:58","modified_gmt":"2020-07-08T04:42:58","slug":"mendicino-immigration-key-to-canadas-21st-century-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2020\/07\/08\/mendicino-immigration-key-to-canadas-21st-century-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Mendicino: Immigration key to Canada\u2019s 21st century success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>In a new article, two Canadian ministers write on the importance of immigration to the country&#8217;s economy.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe progressive immigration policies we continue to implement are laying the foundation for Canada\u2019s success in the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are the words of two Canadian ministers who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ipolitics.ca\/2020\/07\/01\/immigration-the-canadian-advantage\/\">recently wrote<\/a>\u00a0on the importance of immigration to the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Mendicino is Canada\u2019s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship while Navdeep Bains is the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.<\/p>\n<p>Mendicino\u2019s family arrived to Canada from Italy following the Second World War while Bains\u2019 family arrived from India.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the ministers represent two of countless immigrant success stories across Canada as they oversee portfolios which are critical to the country\u2019s economic development.<\/p>\n<p>In their article, Mendicino and Bains discuss that while starting off as new immigrants in Canada can be difficult at first, the country provides newcomers with many opportunities to succeed, which enriches Canada in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the two ministers are responsible for enacting policies that help continue Canada\u2019s positive immigration cycle: Canada provides immigrants with opportunities, and immigrants repay Canada economically and socially.<\/p>\n<p>Both ministers share the mandate of attracting immigrants, foreign workers, and international students to Canada.<\/p>\n<p>To support this mandate, the federal government launched the Global Talent Stream in 2017, which has since attracted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2020\/07\/global-talent-is-pivoting-north-to-canada-0714909.html\">tens of thousands of tech workers<\/a>\u00a0to Canada, and also created tens of thousands of more jobs in the process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcomendicino\/status\/1272951554950205441<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Canada was set to welcome higher levels of global talent in 2020 following the strong year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2020\/02\/canada-broke-another-record-by-welcoming-341000-immigrants-in-2019-0213697.html#gs.959vbw\">it had in 2019.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Mendicino announced Canada\u2019s new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canada-immigration-levels-plans.html?_ga=2.119232462.631798403.1593112968-1539971697.1591108310#gs.959vvl\">Immigration Levels Plan<\/a>\u00a0which would support higher levels of newcomer attraction.<\/p>\n<p>The coronavirus pandemic has impacted these plans but Mendicino has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2020\/06\/after-u-s-immigration-ban-minister-mendicino-says-come-to-canada-0614840.html#gs.95ctd7\">consistently stated<\/a>\u00a0that immigration will remain a priority for Canada.<\/p>\n<p>This was stressed once again by him in his recent article.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that our focus must remain on attracting top-tier talent to Canada\u201d, write Mendicino and Bains.<\/p>\n<p>This is demonstrated by the fact that foreign workers are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/coronavirus-covid-19-impact-canada-immigration-visa-border-latest-news.html#gs.95czjm\">largely exempt<\/a>\u00a0from Canada\u2019s current COVID-19 travel restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry.html#gs.95d1bj\">Express Entry<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/provincial-nomination-program.html#gs.95d2bi\">Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)<\/a>\u00a0draws are still happening.
