MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Ambassadors and diplomats from the European Union (EU) on Tuesday showed solidarity with the country’s fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) by donating blood to the Philippine Red Cross.<\/p>\n \u201cIn response to the call of the Philippine Red Cross for blood donation, we have all come here to donate our blood to avert a shortage of supply created by the pandemic,” said Thomas Wiersing, Charg\u00e9 d’Affaires a.i. of the EU Delegation to the Philippines.<\/p>\n Wiersing was joined by Ambassadors Saskia de Lang (Netherlands), Harald Fries (Sweden), Charg\u00e9 d’Affaires a.i. Mihail Sion (Romania), Consul General of Spain Fernando Heredia and colleagues from the Embassies of Belgium, the Netherlands and the EU Delegation.<\/p>\n Senator Richard Gordon, the chairperson of the Philippine Red Cross, also witnessed the bloodletting drive.<\/p>\n The EU, through its humanitarian arm European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), has been a long-standing partner and donor to the PRC.<\/p>\n During the Taal Volcano eruption early this year, the bloc provided over PHP42 million to the Red Cross response.<\/p>\n ECHO also provided funding support during recent calamities including Typhoon Tisoy, dengue outbreak, Batanes earthquake, and the conflict in Mindanao.<\/p>\n \u201cWe continue to express our support as ‘we heal as one’ community.
