JOEY DALUMPINES\/PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Malaca\u00f1ang on Saturday expressed optimism about the study on the convalescent plasma transfusion as treatment for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) would yield \u201cpositive results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope this study will yield positive results and be our country&#8217;s contribution to the global effort to develop Covid-19 treatment,\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said.<\/p>\n<p>Roque issued the statement on Saturday night, as he noted that the Palace welcomes the start of the government-funded study on the use of convalescent blood plasma as one of the modes of therapy for Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato dela Pe\u00f1a announced that the clinical study of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) on convalescent plasma transfusion as possible adjunctive therapy to prevent Covid-19 progression already started on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Adjunctive therapy is a treatment used to support the main or primary treatment of diseases.<\/p>\n<p>As definite therapy for Covid-19 is still lacking, the clinical study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of convalescent plasma transfusion as adjunctive therapy for the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Convalescent plasma is taken from Covid-19 patients\u2019 blood who recovered from the highly-infectious disease and contains neutralizing antibodies against the new coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Roque said the UP-PGH\u2019s ongoing study would be funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe use of convalescent plasma as adjunctive therapy for patients hospitalized for Covid-19 is being undertaken by the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital, with funding support from the DOST,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As of Saturday, the Philippines has reported 41,830 confirmed Covid-19 cases, with 11,453 recoveries and 1,290 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Ryan, executive director of World Health Organization\u2019s health emergencies program, earlier said the use of convalescent plasma is a valid approach in treating infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan said this was done in previous outbreaks such as the H1N1 influenza virus pandemic, 2003 SARS-CoV-1 epidemic, and the 2012 MERS-CoV epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines started the call for blood donations from Covid-19 survivors in April.<\/p>\n<p>The study on the convalescent plasma transfusion will run for 12 months, DOST earlier said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0\u2013 Malaca\u00f1ang on Saturday expressed optimism about the study on the convalescent plasma transfusion as treatment for the coronavirus disease &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":252612,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-260533","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-ruth-abbey-gita-carlos","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/260533","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=260533"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/260533\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":260534,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/260533\/revisions\/260534"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/252612"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=260533"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=260533"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=260533"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
