(File <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FP_Champagne\/status\/1230959315600715776\">photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FP_Champagne\/\">FP_Champagne\/Twitter<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>July 3, 2020 &#8211; Ottawa, Ontario &#8211; Global Affairs Canada<\/p>\n<p>The Honourable Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada joins the international community in reiterating its serious concern at the passage of national security legislation for Hong Kong by the Standing Committee of the National People\u2019s Congress of China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis legislation was enacted in a secretive process, without the participation of Hong Kong\u2019s legislature, judiciary or people, and in violation of international obligations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis process demonstrated disregard for Hong Kong\u2019s Basic Law and the high degree of autonomy promised for Hong Kong under the \u2018one country, two systems\u2019 framework. Hong Kong\u2019s role as a global hub was built on that foundation. Without it, Canada is forced to reassess existing arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffective immediately, Canada will treat exports of sensitive goods to Hong Kong in the same way as those destined for China.
