The Canadian government has confirmed to CIC News it is extending its coronavirus travel restrictions for at least one more month.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

The Canadian border will remain closed for at least another month in an effort to curb coronavirus numbers.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Canada\u00a0originally implemented<\/a>\u00a0its travel restrictions on March 18 and they were set to expire today, on June 30.<\/p>\n

In an email to\u00a0CIC News<\/em>, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) confirmed that the travel restrictions will continue.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s\u00a0new Order in Council<\/a>\u00a0states that the travel restrictions will now expire at 23:59:59 EDT on July 31.<\/p>\n

This means that only\u00a0exempt travelers<\/a>\u00a0will be able to enter Canada. CBSA will continue to only admit travelers to Canada for\u00a0essential reasons<\/a>. In addition,\u00a0immediate family can enter Canada.<\/a><\/p>\n

The decision to extend travel restrictions comes as no surprise. Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada would\u00a0not rush to re-open<\/a>\u00a0the borders. Canada and the U.S. will also continue to restrict cross-border travel until at\u00a0least July 21.<\/a><\/p>\n

This temporary order is one of Canada\u2019s measures to help contain the spread of coronavirus. Another new Order in Council extends Canada\u2019s quarantine requirement\u00a0until August 31.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

It is\u00a0currently the law<\/a>\u00a0for most individuals entering Canada to self-quarantine for 14 days.<\/p>\n

Canada is flattening the curve<\/h3>\n

The travel restrictions have contributed to Canada\u2019s success in flattening the coronavirus curve. In recent days, all of Canada has been able to record around\u00a0200 or fewer<\/a>\u00a0new daily COVID-19 cases.<\/p>\n

This represents a significant improvement compared with the start of the pandemic when over 1,000 daily cases were being recorded across Canada.<\/p>\n

Despite Canada\u2019s success, the country is remaining cautious on re-opening its economy and borders. Provinces across the country have lifted many lock-down restrictions, though social distancing measures are in place.<\/p>\n

Maintaining border restrictions is not ideal, given how important immigration and travel is to Canada\u2019s economy, but Canada is staying the course so that it can eventually be in strong position to welcome foreign travelers once again.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s immigration system continues to operate<\/h3>\n

Canada\u2019s immigration system has\u00a0continued to operate<\/a>\u00a0since the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Canada has introduced flexible measures so that immigration candidates can have more time to submit their documentation.<\/p>\n

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to hold\u00a0Express Entry<\/a>\u00a0draws. It is issuing\u00a0invitations to apply (ITA)<\/a>\u00a0to immigration candidates, even if they are currently outside of Canada. As long as an immigration candidate meets the eligibility criteria of Express Entry, they can still receive an ITA during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

For example, submitting an Express Entry profile and then obtaining a\u00a0provincial nomination<\/a>\u00a0effectively guarantees that a candidate will receive an ITA for permanent residence.<\/p>\n

IRCC held two\u00a0Express Entry draws last week.<\/a><\/p>\n

It\u00a0has already issued 49,900 ITAs<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, which is more than what IRCC issued in the first half of 2019.<\/p>\n

In addition, various provinces are inviting immigration candidates, including those overseas, through the\u00a0Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
