ACE MORANDANTE\/PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday urged his fellow Southeast Asian leaders to remain united and defend an \u201copen and rules-based international order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Duterte made the call amid the ongoing tensions between the United States (US) and China.<\/p>\n<p>During the 36th annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) held through video conference, Duterte acknowledged that the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic has \u201cadded a new layer to the complex relationship&#8221; between the world\u2019s two largest economies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must also not lose sight of the geopolitical shifts that have (accelerated) in the past six months. The rivalry between the United States and China was already well underway before this crisis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte, nevertheless, told his fellow Asean leaders to stay neutral.<\/p>\n<p>He said the 10-member regional bloc should aim for global prosperity and order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Great Powers will continue to draw us into their respective camps.
