ANKARA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A senior Chinese diplomat has met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Chinese media reported Thursday.<\/p>\n

According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), held a dialogue with Pompeo at the latter’s request on Tuesday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth sides fully expounded their respective stances and deemed the dialogue to be constructive,\u201d the report said, adding the meeting was held in the US state of Hawaii.<\/p>\n

Yang is also director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n

The two sides \u201cconducted in-depth exchanges\u201d on China-US relations as well as global and regional issues of mutual concern.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey agreed to take action to implement in earnest the consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries and maintain contact and communication,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n

Notably, US President Donald Trump signed legislation Wednesday that calls for him to impose sanctions on Chinese officials for Beijing’s crackdown on the minority Muslim Uyghur ethnic group.<\/p>\n

The legislation “holds accountable perpetrators of human rights violations and abuses such as the systematic use of indoctrination camps, forced labor, and intrusive surveillance to eradicate the ethnic identity and religious beliefs of Uyghurs and other minorities in China,” Trump said.<\/p>\n

China’s Xinjiang region is home to around 10 million Uyghurs. The Turkic Muslim group, which makes up around 45 percent of Xinjiang\u2019s population, has long accused China’s authorities of cultural, religious, and economic discrimination.<\/p>\n

Up to 1 million people, or about 7 percent of the Muslim population in Xinjiang, have been incarcerated in an expanding network of “political re-education” camps, according to US officials and UN experts.<\/p>\n
