JOEY DALUMPINES\/PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte will join his fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) leaders in a virtual conference hosted by Vietnam on June 26, Malaca\u00f1ang confirmed on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cKinu-kumpirma ko po na dadalo po<\/em>\u00a0[si President Duterte]\u00a0<em>dahil ito po ay<\/em>\u00a0online meeting ng Asean (I am confirming that President Duterte will be joining the online Asean meeting),\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser aired on state-run PTV-4.<\/p>\n<p>Asean leaders were supposed to hold their 36th annual summit in April this year but the meeting was postponed due to the global threat posed by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a proposal from Vietnam, this year\u2019s chair of the 10-man regional bloc, to hold the 36th Asean summit in Hanoi, Vietnam on June 27 and 28.<\/p>\n<p>However, the final decision was to resort to a virtual summit on June 26 as the Covid-19 pandemic remains a threat in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Roque said he was not privy to the issues Duterte would raise during his virtual meeting with his fellow Asean leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext week\u00a0<em>pa naman po iyan, siguro po pupwede nating isapubliko yung<\/em>\u00a0agenda\u00a0<em>ng iba\u2019t ibang mga<\/em>\u00a0Asean meeting (It will be held next week so perhaps, the agenda of the Asean meetings will be made public before the conduct of the virtual conference),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Asean leaders have held several virtual meetings with their dialogue partners in an effort to plot a strategy to overcome the Covid-19 crisis that has gripped the region.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Duterte said Asean members must work together to counter the adverse social and economic impact of Covid-19 pandemic in the regional bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Containing the spread of the novel coronavirus is the current priority of the 10 Asean member-states.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the Philippines and Vietnam, other Asean members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has the highest number of Covid-19 infections among the ASEAN member-states, reporting a total of 41,341 cases.<\/p>\n<p>It is followed by Singapore (41,216), the Philippines (27,238), Malaysia (8,515), Thailand (3,135), Vietnam (335), Myanmar (262), Brunei (141), Cambodia (126), and Laos (19).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte will join his fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) leaders in a virtual conference hosted &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":257646,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-258482","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-ruth-abbey-gita-carlos","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/258482","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=258482"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/258482\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":258483,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/258482\/revisions\/258483"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/257646"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=258482"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=258482"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=258482"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
