{"id":258079,"date":"2020-06-15T06:42:10","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T10:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=258079"},"modified":"2020-06-15T06:42:10","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T10:42:10","slug":"speed-up-tourism-infra-projects-for-covid-19-recovery-cayetano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2020\/06\/15\/speed-up-tourism-infra-projects-for-covid-19-recovery-cayetano\/","title":{"rendered":"Speed up tourism infra projects for Covid-19 recovery: Cayetano"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_245182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-245182\" style=\"width: 666px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/photo-1542213493895-edf5b94f5a96.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-245182\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/photo-1542213493895-edf5b94f5a96.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"666\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/photo-1542213493895-edf5b94f5a96.jpg 666w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/photo-1542213493895-edf5b94f5a96-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-245182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Boracay, Philippines (Photo: @ramonkagie\/Unsplash)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday underscored the need to speed up processes to address the gaps in tourism infrastructure as the Philippines gradually reopens its economy.<\/p>\n<p>Cayetano said the acceleration of tourism-related infrastructure could spur the country\u2019s economic recovery after the coronavirus crisis has subsided.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTalagang may mga<\/em>\u00a0challenges\u00a0<em>pero nakikita namin na may<\/em>\u00a0opportunity\u00a0<em>dito sa<\/em>\u00a0tourism (There are challenges ahead, but we see an opportunity in tourism), if we can put a big sum of money\u00a0<em>sa<\/em>\u00a0(in) tourism-related infrastructure,\u201d Cayetano said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMerong mga<\/em>\u00a0systems that can be put in\u00a0<em>para kung<\/em>\u00a0one year or one year and a half\u00a0<em>o kahit<\/em>\u00a0two years\u00a0<em>abutin ang<\/em>\u00a0Covid, after that<em>\u00a0handang handa na ang ating bansa at bawat sulok ng ating bansa na may<\/em>\u00a0tourism industry to get back on track (There are systems that can be put in so that even after Covid-19 lasts for a year, a year and a half, or even two years, after that, our country and every part of it that has a tourism industry would be definitely ready to get back on track),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives approved on third reading the Accelerated Recovery and Investments Stimulus for the Economy (ARISE) bill, which aims to protect and assist up to 15.7 million workers, create 3 million short-term jobs, and 1.5 million infrastructure jobs over three years, and help up to 5.57 million micro, small, and medium enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>Under the bill, an allocation of PHP58 billion is earmarked to revive the country\u2019s tourism sector, which suffered serious losses due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), the tourism sector across the regions has lost an estimated total of PHP60.25 billion during the two-month enhanced community quarantine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the passage of the stimulus package, we can help save lives and livelihood of the Filipinos and channel our investment to the hardest-hit sectors of the economy, such as the tourism sector,\u201d Cayetano said.<\/p>\n<p>The ARISE Bill stipulates that the Department of Tourism shall assist critically impacted businesses that are DOT\u2013accredited tourism enterprises in any of the following programs: interest free-loans; credit facilities for upgrading of current establishments to be compliant with new health standards; marketing and product development promotions and programs; and grants for education and training for tourism stakeholder for new normal alternative livelihood programs.<\/p>\n<p>Other proposed programs under the bill include the utilization of information technology for the improvement of tourism services, development of a tourist tracking system for emergency response, and establishment of spatial database to improve planning capacity;
