(Shutterstock photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>New Canadians who have had their swearing in postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis may soon have the opportunity to take the oath in online ceremonies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Newcomers to Canada who were about to officially become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canadian-citizenship-immigration-and-settlement-in-canada.html#gs.7eft0j\">Canadian citizens<\/a>\u00a0and whose ceremonies have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic may soon be able to take the oath of citizenship virtually.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement sent to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/citizenship-ceremonies-virtual-ircc-1.5595253\">CBC News<\/a>, Canada\u2019s federal government said it will start \u201cto implement virtual citizenship ceremonies [\u2026] as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first online ceremonies will be available to those who \u201chave a pressing need for Canadian citizenship\u201d as well as those who had previously been scheduled to take the oath in person and whose events were cancelled due to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/coronavirus-covid-19-impact-canada-immigration-visa-border-latest-news.html#gs.7ef6wz\">special measures<\/a>\u00a0that were implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) temporarily cancelled all citizenship ceremonies and tests more than two months ago as part of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2020\/03\/new-canadian-immigration-instructions-during-coronavirus-pandemic-0313909.html#gs.7egc00\">myriad of special measures<\/a>\u00a0introduced in response to the global pandemic. At that time, the government stated that these events would be rescheduled \u201cin the near future\u201d and did not provide a date for their reoccurrence. It also stated that those affected by the cancellations would be given a new date and time in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This announcement by IRCC is yet another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2020\/06\/will-canada-lift-its-travel-restrictions-on-july-1-0614548.html#gs.7efban\">positive development<\/a>\u00a0for prospective immigrants as well those already in Canada and whose lives have been in limbo since mid-March.<\/p>\n<p>IRCC said in the statement the virtual citizenship events would be designed to \u201cprotect the integrity of the legal process and reflect the importance of the occasion\u201d and would soon be scheduled. No further details have been made public yet and no timetable has been set.<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits of Canadian citizenship<\/h3>\n<p>A person usually takes the solemn oath before a judge or citizenship official, often in the company of other immigrants who also become Canadian citizens. Taking the oath of citizenship is the final legal requirement for applicants over the age of 14 who wish to become Canadian citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Becoming a citizen is a life-changing event for immigrants to Canada. It marks the end of their journey as newcomers and the beginning of their journey as Canadians with the same rights as Canadian-born citizens. These rights include being able to vote, run for office, to get preferential treatment when applying for public service jobs, the right to travel on a Canadian passport, among others.<\/p>\n<p>To become Canadian citizens\u2014a process called \u201cnaturalization,\u201d\u2014newcomers must first become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canadian-immigration-permanent-resident-card.html#gs.7efvo8\">permanent residents<\/a>\u00a0in Canada. A permanent resident of Canada can apply for citizenship after being physically present in the country for at least three years in the last five years and completing Canadian income tax returns.
