(File photo: De an Sun\/Unsplash)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, President Rodrigo Duterte dissuaded the public from resorting to the online purchase of medical equipment, such as face masks.<\/p>\n<p>In a taped public address aired on state-run PTV-4 on Friday morning, Duterte cautioned the public against falling prey to online sellers who are behind face mask scams.<\/p>\n<p>He advised them not to buy face masks online, especially if the sellers are from the provinces, mentioning Pampanga and Abra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to address this to everybody.\u00a0<em>Mga kababayan<\/em>\u00a0(To my fellow countrymen), do not fall for that sa online-online (online purchase). It has never been perfected. And all the scams that man could think of, that they can perpetrate on the innocent public,\u00a0<em>pinag-aaralan nila iyan<\/em>\u00a0(they study that),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n<p>He said it would be better to purchase face masks in Metro Manila.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSaan sila mag-kuha ng<\/em>\u00a0masks\u00a0<em>doon? Nandito ang Maynila. Dito kayo sa Maynila<\/em>\u00a0(Where will those online sellers get the face masks? Here in Manila. So buy the face masks in Manila),\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n<p>The President also told the public to inspect the item first before giving the payment.<\/p>\n<p>He gave the advice, noting that scammers \u201ctake advantage of the misery of the people\u201d amid the Covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe careful,<em>\u00a0lokohan \u2018to ngayon<\/em>\u00a0(It\u2019s really a scam now). The best is (tell them), \u2018Give me the goods, I pay you.
