(File photo: Presidential Photo via PNA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The grounds for the suspension of the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States (US) are \u201cexplanatory,\u201d Malaca\u00f1ang said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wordings of the communiqu\u00e9 sent to the US State Department, the words itself are explanatory,\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel, referring to the diplomatic note sent to Washington about the suspension of the VFA abrogation.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. announced on Tuesday night that his office, upon President Rodrigo Duterte\u2019s directive, has notified the US about the Philippines\u2019 decision to suspend the termination of the VFA.<\/p>\n<p>In a diplomatic note dated June 1, Manila informed Washington that the suspension of VFA\u2019s abrogation \u201cshall start on even date and shall continue for six months, which period is extendible by the Philippines for six months\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The revocation of the military pact between the two countries was suspended \u201cin light of political and other developments in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Roque said only Locsin can elaborate on the reasons cited for the suspension of the VFA\u2019s termination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will defer to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs\u2026 He (Locsin) is the only one who will expound on it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte never mentioned with his Cabinet members his plan to suspend the abrogation of VFA, Roque said.<\/p>\n<p>Roque, nevertheless, said he would ask Duterte on Thursday about the directive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not publicly brought up.
