(Pexels photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Malaca\u00f1ang on Saturday clarified that the Fabunan anti-viral injection is still not being considered by the Philippines as a cure for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Hindi pa po approved ang Fabunan<\/em>\u00a0(Fabunan is not yet approved [as a registered product that can be used to treat Covid-19]),\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said during the Laging Handa program aired on state-run PTV-4.<\/p>\n<p>Roque\u2019s remarks came following the viral social media posts which claimed that a community in Zambales had received shots of Fabunan.<\/p>\n<p>The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already issued a cease and desist order against the unregistered anti-viral drug.<\/p>\n<p>Roque said the public should understand that the FDA\u2019s approval is needed before a vaccine or drug can be considered as a cure for the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Importante po kasi na bago maibigay sa publiko ang kahit anong gamot, kasama na po diyan ang Fabunan, kinakailangan rehistrado sa FDA<\/em>\u00a0(It is important that before we allow the commercial use of any drugs, including Fabunan, they need to be first registered with FDA),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>There were claims that Fabunan, a patented anti-viral drug against dengue developed by Washington-based Filipino doctor Ruben Fabunan, has been \u201cproven to be used to treat Covid-19\u201d and is already an \u201capproved\u201d drug.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA, in its April 8 advisory, cautioned the public that no drug and vaccine has been licensed \u201cspecifically for use in Covid-19 treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On April 22, Malaca\u00f1ang urged FDA to study if Fabunan is safe and effective for use in the treatment of Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Roque said the Philippines would participate in the clinical trials for a vaccine against Covid-19 so as not to compromise the Filipinos\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018<em>Yung clinical studies, iyan po \u2019yung magsisiguro na hindi po magiging banta sa kalusugan ng ating kababayan iyang bagong gamot<\/em>\u00a0(The conduct of clinical studies will make sure that any new drug [for Covid-19] will not be a threat to the health of the public),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines is set to collaborate with Chinese and Taiwanese organizations for the clinical trials for a vaccine against Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>In a public address on Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterte was confident that China would be the first country to develop a Covid-19 vaccine and even floated the possibility that it could be available by September this year.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte made the latest remarks as he earlier sought the immediate purchase of a vaccine for the treatment of Covid-19, once it is available.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization has said a Covid-19 vaccine may become available to the public in the next 18 months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0\u2013 Malaca\u00f1ang on Saturday clarified that the Fabunan anti-viral injection is still not being considered by the Philippines as a &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":249142,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-256665","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-ruth-abbey-gita-carlos","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/256665","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=256665"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/256665\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":256667,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/256665\/revisions\/256667"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/249142"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=256665"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=256665"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=256665"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
