(Pexels photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>May 28, 2020 \u2013 Montreal \u2013 National Film Board of Canada (NFB)<\/p>\n<p>Vincent Morisset\u2019s<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motto.io\/\"><strong><em>Motto<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, an interactive website for your phone designed by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aatoaa.com\/\">AATOAA<\/a>\u00a0studio and produced by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/\">National Film Board of Canada<\/a>\u00a0(NFB), is available\u00a0<strong>as of today,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>free of charge\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motto.io\/\"><strong>motto.io<\/strong><\/a>. Part ghost story, part scavenger hunt, part interactive novella,\u00a0<strong><em>Motto\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>finds a way to be both documentary and fiction\u2014incorporating participants\u2019 lo-fi, unstaged footage into its own emotional narrative. Users can discover its six chapters at their own pace, inside their homes or out in the world, their phone in hand. Combining traditional literary forms with the short-form video vernacular of the Internet,\u00a0<strong><em>Motto<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is available in English and French.<\/p>\n<p>The work is an original creation from AATOAA,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vincentmorisset.com\/\">Morisset\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0acclaimed digital production studio, working with programmer<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edouardlb.com\/\"><strong>\u00c9douard Lanct\u00f4t-Benoit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and editor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/caroline-robert.com\/\"><strong>Caroline Robert<\/strong><\/a>. It was written by Canadian journalist and award-winning novelist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/byseanmichaels.com\/\"><strong>Sean Michaels<\/strong><\/a>,<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>author of Us Conductors (winner of the Scotiabank Giller Prize) and The Wagers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>About Vincent Morisset<\/strong><br \/>\nVincent Morisset first came to prominence through his collaborations with the band Arcade Fire, particularly for the interactive music videos\u00a0<em>Neon Bible<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Just a Reflektor<\/em>, which won an Emmy. He also directed\u00a0<em>Inni<\/em>, a live-experience feature about Icelandic band Sigur R\u00f3s, in addition to interactive projects such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/interactive\/bla_bla\/\"><strong><em>BLA\u00a0BLA<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/interactive\/way_to_go\"><strong><em>Way to Go<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, both of which were produced at the NFB and have won many awards. As the ghost story unfolds, they are asked to contribute to the experience\u2014it\u2019s a scavenger hunt of miniature video clips, each one an easy, digestible task.\u00a0<strong><em>Motto<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0uses an ingenious, hidden logic to weave these videos into its narrative, letting the viewers\u2019 own images become stand-ins for the narrator\u2019s daydreams and mementos. Gradually\u2014and, in a crucial design choice, anonymously\u2014everybody who experiences\u00a0<strong><em>Motto<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is joining forces with those who have experienced it before, adding intimate fragments of their lives to a pool of collective memory. It up-ends the traditional role of the spectator, transforming the passive viewer into a protagonist and co-creator.
