Global Affairs Canada takes this opportunity to remind Canadians that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/advisories\">official advisory to avoid non-essential travel outside Canada<\/a>\u00a0is still in effect.<\/p>\n<p>While a large number of Canadians who were travelling outside Canada have now returned home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some may have to remain abroad. Canadians abroad should be mindful of severe weather conditions, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/health-safety\/large-scale-emergencies-abroad\/hurricanes-typhoons-cyclones-monsoons\">hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones and monsoons<\/a>,\u00a0that could have a serious impact on their safety.<\/p>\n<p>If you are currently abroad, or if you must travel despite the advisory, it is important to check our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/advisories\">Travel Advice and Advisories<\/a>\u00a0to know if the region where you are located is prone to hurricanes. The most threatened areas are the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and the east and Gulf coasts of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>If you have to remain in a hurricane-prone destination during hurricane season, the following advice could be especially helpful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stay informed<\/strong>\u00a0of the latest regional weather forecasts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow local emergency preparedness recommendations and instructions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sign up with our\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/registration\"><strong>Registration of Canadians Abroad<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<strong>service<\/strong>\u00a0to receive important updates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read our\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/health-safety\/covid-19-security\"><strong>advice for Canadians\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><strong>abroad<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/health-safety\/covid-19-security\">Travel and COVID-19: Your safety and security outside Canada<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Talk to your\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/documents\/travel-insurance\"><strong>travel insurance<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0provider\u00a0<\/strong>about your insurance policy. Find out if you are covered for medical treatment if you become infected with COVID-19 and for extended stays outside Canada.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carry emergency contact information<\/strong>\u00a0of the nearest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/assistance\/embassies-consulates\">Government of Canada office<\/a>\u00a0and of our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/assistance\/emergency-assistance\">Emergency Watch and Response Centre<\/a>, open 24\/7.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep in close contact with your family<\/strong>\u00a0so they are aware of your situation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay up to date<\/strong>\u00a0on developing situations through our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/mobile\">Travel Smart<\/a>\u00a0app\u00a0and our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/travelGoC\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/travelGoC\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0channels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Global Affairs Canada continues to provide 24\/7 consular support to Canadians abroad through its offices abroad and the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa. Canadians who need consular assistance can contact the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/assistance\/embassies-consulates\">nearest Government of Canada office<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/assistance\/emergeny-assistance\">Emergency Watch and Response Centre<\/a>\u00a0by calling +1\u00a0613\u00a0996 8885 (call collect where available).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>Quick facts<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>On March 13, 2020, Global Affairs Canada issued an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/advisories\">Official Global Travel Advisory<\/a>\u00a0recommending that Canadians avoid non-essential travel outside Canada until further notice.<\/li>\n<li>On March 16, 2020, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the creation of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/assistance\/emergency-info\/financial-assistance\/covid-19-financial-help\">COVID-19 emergency loan program to assist Canadians abroad<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Global Affairs Canada worked closely with foreign governments and airlines to facilitate flights for Canadians in Canada\u2019s largest and most complex consular operation.<\/li>\n<li>Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada\u2019s network of 178 missions in 110 countries remains open to serve Canadians.
