(Pexels photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA \u2013 The Philippine embassy in Washington D.C. is focusing its efforts on coordinating assistance to the stranded Filipino J1 visa holders in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>J1 visa holders are work-and-study-based exchange visitors sent to the US under sponsorship, in most cases, for educational and cultural programs.<\/p>\n<p>Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez said many Filipino J1 visa holders were admitted as trainees in the hospitality industry but stranded after the closure of accommodation establishments due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re working with the sponsors to ask them to bring them home, however, the problem is that flights are quite limited&#8230; so that&#8217;s another big problem we have to resolve,&#8221; he said in a Laging Handa briefing Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The embassy has already made representations with the visa sponsors, local placement agencies in the Philippines as well as the State Department in crafting a &#8220;concerted and considerate&#8221; response to the J1 interns&#8217; situation.<\/p>\n<p>Since mid-March, a number of J1 interns returned home by tapping into their personal contingency funds.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate statement, the embassy said those without the financial capacity to cover airfare and daily subsistence may ask for aid.<\/p>\n<p>However, such requests are evaluated on a &#8220;case-to-case basis&#8221; given constraints on government resources and the thousands of distressed overseas Filipino workers who also need support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rest assured that Philippine government is committed to finding long-term solutions to these issues and enhancing the protection of Filipino exchange visitors moving forward,&#8221; the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Romualdez reported that a total of 253 Filipinos in the US and the Caribbean have been infected with Covid-19, 137 of whom have died.<\/p>\n<p>Of the death toll, 18 are front-line medical workers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA \u2013 The Philippine embassy in Washington D.C. is focusing its efforts on coordinating assistance to the stranded Filipino J1 &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":249132,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-254657","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-joyce-ann-l-rocamora","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/254657","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=254657"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/254657\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":254660,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/254657\/revisions\/254660"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/249132"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=254657"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=254657"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=254657"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
