MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Malaca\u00f1ang on Monday congratulated Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle for being promoted to the rank of Cardinal-Bishop, the highest title within the College of Cardinals.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made this statement after the Vatican press announced Tagle\u2019s promotion on Friday (May 1).<\/p>\n

\u201cKami po ay binabati ang ating<\/em>\u00a0his Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle\u00a0sa kaniyang pagtatalaga bilang isang<\/em>\u00a0Cardinal-Bishop (We are congratulating his Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle for being promoted to the rank of Cardinal-Bishop),\u201d Roque said in a virtual presser.<\/p>\n

He said Tagle\u2019s success meant the success of the entire nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cAng tagumpay niyo po,<\/em>\u00a0your Eminence,\u00a0ay tagumpay ng buong sambayanang Pilipino. Maraming salamat po sa karangalan<\/em>\u00a0and congratulations (Your triumph, your Eminence, is the triumph of all Filipinos. Thank you for this honor and congratulations),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

With his promotion, Tagle now joins the ranks of 13 other Cardinal Bishops \u2014 10 from the Latin Church and three Cardinal patriarchs from the Oriental rites.<\/p>\n

The College of Cardinals is structured in three ranks: Cardinal-Deacons, Cardinal-Priests, and Cardinal-Bishops.<\/p>\n

Cardinal-Bishops hold jurisdiction over a church in a suburb of Rome while working in departments of the Roman Curia, the central administration of the church.<\/p>\n

Cardinal-Deacons, often called \u201cthe Pope\u2019s Cabinet\u201d, also work full time in the curia, while Cardinal-Priests work in dioceses all over the world.<\/p>\n

It is also from the ranks of Cardinal-Bishops that the Dean of College of Cardinals is elected to preside at the conclave in the case of \u201csede vacante\u201d, a period when there is no pope.<\/p>\n

There are customarily six Cardinal-Bishops from the Latin Church until Pope Francis broke the tradition and appointed more of them.<\/p>\n

Last December, the Pope appointed Tagle the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, a major Vatican post.<\/p>\n

Tagle is the second Asian to hold the post, the other being Cardinal Ivan Dias of India who served from 2006 to 2011.<\/p>\n

Tagle left his position as Archbishop of Manila in February this year to take up his new post in Rome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
