{"id":253601,"date":"2020-04-30T20:56:39","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T00:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=253601"},"modified":"2020-04-30T20:56:39","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T00:56:39","slug":"imf-calls-on-world-to-make-green-recovery-from-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2020\/04\/30\/imf-calls-on-world-to-make-green-recovery-from-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"IMF calls on world to make green recovery from Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_226304\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226304\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Headquarters_of_the_International_Monetary_Fund_Washington_DC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-226304\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Headquarters_of_the_International_Monetary_Fund_Washington_DC.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Headquarters_of_the_International_Monetary_Fund_Washington_DC.jpg 500w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Headquarters_of_the_International_Monetary_Fund_Washington_DC-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-226304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Georgieva said taking measures now to fight the climate crisis is not just a \u201cnice-to-have\u201d but a \u201cmust-have if we are to leave a better world for our children.\u201d (File <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=897043\">Photo By International Monetary Fund\/Wikimedia commons, Public Domain<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong>ANKARA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Fiscal measures implemented by governments against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) need to be harmonized to combat climate change and ensure an environmentally sustainable recovery from the pandemic, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Wednesday.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;If this recovery is to be sustainable \u2013 if our world is to become more resilient \u2013 we must do everything in our power to promote a green recovery,&#8221; Kristalina Georgieva said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Georgieva said taking measures now to fight the climate crisis is not just a \u201cnice-to-have\u201d but a \u201cmust-have if we are to leave a better world for our children.\u201d<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;When governments provide financial lifelines to carbon-intensive companies, they should mandate commitments to reduce carbon emissions,&#8221; she said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Recalling the 2008 global financial crisis, Georgieva said some automakers committed to higher fuel-efficiency standards then.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;With oil prices at record-low levels, now is the time to phase out harmful subsidies,&#8221; she said, adding that governments need to prioritize investment in green technologies, clean transport, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Georgieva highlighted that in the energy sector alone, the IMF estimates that a low-carbon transition would require an investment of USD2.3 trillion every year for a decade.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Promoting green finance, she said the world should focus on using green bonds and other forms of sustainable finance.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;In light of the extended use of government guarantees, part of them can be deployed to mobilize private finance for green investment,&#8221; Georgieva said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Financial firms have to be mandated to better disclose climate risks in their lending and investment portfolios, she added.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Georgieva also said that better ways of pricing in climate risk should be found.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;New IMF analysis shows that over the past 50 years, climate-related disasters have had only a modest effect on equity markets. Clearly, many investors have yet to face up to the new climate reality,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Right price on carbon<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Georgieva warned that a substantially higher carbon price is needed to encourage climate-smart investment and to accelerate the shift to cleaner fuels and more energy efficiency.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She said the current global carbon price is only USD2 per ton, way below the levels needed to keep global warming under 2\u00b0C, which the IMF estimated to be USD75 per ton.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">This transition must be fair and growth-friendly, Georgieva said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;For example, carbon tax revenues can be used to provide upfront assistance to poorer households, lower burdensome taxes, and support investments in health, education, and infrastructure,\u201d she said.
