(PNA file photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Department of Education (DepEd) is preparing a learning continuity plan for the upcoming school year amid the country\u2019s fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, an education official said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We foresee a number of disruptions this coming school year\u00a0<em>kaya naghahanda kami ng<\/em>\u00a0(we are preparing) learning continuity plan,\u201d DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said in a radio interview.\u00a0<em>\u201cKung ang<\/em>\u00a0Covid-19\u00a0<em>ay tuloy-tuloy, certainly, ang kaligtasan ng ating mga guro at mga mag-aaral ang magiging pangunahing<\/em>\u00a0concern<em>\u00a0natin<\/em>\u00a0(If Covid-19 persists, certainly, the safety of our teachers and learners will be our major concern).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malaluan, however, said the learning continuity plan may not include the mass testing for learners and teachers as suggested by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.<\/p>\n<p>Gathalian, chair of the Senate committee on education, said the mass testing would ensure the safe re-opening of classes.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker said the cost of the tests should be shouldered by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) or the local government units.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Baka naman ang ibig sabihin niya sa<\/em>\u00a0mass testing<em>\u00a0ay<\/em>\u00a0not necessarily universal,\u00a0<em>may<\/em>\u00a0targeting<em>\u00a0parin na mangyayari<\/em>\u00a0(May be what he [Gatchalian] meant by mass testing is not necessarily universal, there will still be targeting),\u201d Malaluan said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Department of Health should be consulted on Gatchalian\u2019s suggestion.<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest DepEd data, the country has more than 27 million learners and over 800,000 public teachers nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Citing some schools designated as facilities for community quarantine, Malaluan said the DepEd is considering the adjustment of the school opening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not necessarily face to face classroom setting,\u00a0<em>tinitingnan namin ang<\/em>\u00a0multi-modal<em>\u00a0na pag<\/em>deliver\u00a0<em>ng mga<\/em>\u00a0lessons\u00a0<em>at iyan ang hinahanda<\/em>. (we&#8217;re looking into multi-modal delivery of lessons and we&#8217;re preparing.)
