(File <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/drkarlchua\/photos\/a.380159522345128.1073741827.380154679012279\/432150837145996\/?type=1&amp;amp;theater\">Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/drkarlchua\/\">Dr. Karl Kendrick Chua \/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte has tapped Finance Undersecretary Karl Kendrick Chua as acting secretary of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Malaca\u00f1ang announced on Friday.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The announcement came shortly after Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia confirmed that he stepped down from office due to \u201cpersonal reasons\u201d and \u201cdifferences in development philosophy with a few of (his) fellow Cabinet members\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte had already accepted Pernia\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Palace confirms that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has accepted the resignation of Socioeconomic Secretary Ernesto Pernia who resigned due to personal reasons; and has appointed Department of Finance Undersecretary Karl Kendrick Chua as Acting NEDA Secretary,\u201d Roque said.<\/p>\n<p>Pernia\u2019s resignation came amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Before resigning from office, Pernia was among the Cabinet officials tasked to assess the national government\u2019s response to Covid-19 outbreak and craft policies to address the health crisis in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Pernia served as Socioeconomic Planning secretary and NEDA director general since the start of Duterte\u2019s term in July 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Pernia, in a separate statement, said his decision to resign from post came after consultations with family and colleagues, as well as some \u201creflection\u201d during Holy Week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to thank the President for appointing me to the position.
