(Pexels photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>ANKARA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Even while doing the right thing by regularly washing your hands to guard against coronavirus, people must take care not to use disinfectant and cologne carelessly, according to a Turkish skin doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Filiz Topaloglu Demir, a dermatologist at Medipol Mega University Hospital in Istanbul, suggested using oily moisturizers every time after washing your hands to avoid overly dry skin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople should wash their hands with un-dyed, unscented liquid soaps for at least 20 seconds with water at tap temperature to help stem the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you can\u2019t wash your hands, we recommend disinfecting them with alcohol-based hand disinfectant or cologne with an alcohol content of at least 70%,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>But she stressed that using hand sanitizer cannot replace hand washing, explaining: &#8220;Using these materials too often can damage the hand skin&#8217;s protective layer, possibly causing dehydration and the skin drying out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf skin dryness continues and steps aren\u2019t taken in time, this can result in redness, thickening, and roughening of the skin, and irritation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that dryness can lead to cracks and itching and finally bleeding, tingling and pain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eczema<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Topaloglu also warned that patients who have eczema in particular need to protect their skin against dryness.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid eczema, she urged \u201cnot washing with very hot or cold water, rinsing hands thoroughly, and moistening the hands after each washing with oil-based moisturizers while our skin is slightly moist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said hands must be rinsed and moisturizers applied after using disinfectant and advised people not to wear accessories such as rings, wristbands, and watches due to a greater risk of developing eczema if soap and detergent accumulate under them.<\/p>\n<p>She also underlined was that besides washing hands, people should wear gloves during daily household chores involving detergents such as washing dishes and doing the laundry.<\/p>\n<p>On whether excessive and careless use of alcohol-based disinfectants and cologne causes skin cancer, Topaloglu said no data is indicating that.<\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, she said especially in this period, washing and disinfecting hands is quite important.<\/p>\n<p>Since appearing in Wuhan, China last December, the coronavirus disease, officially known as Covid-19, has spread to at least 184 countries and regions, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n<p>Over 1.35 million cases have been reported worldwide, with the global death toll topped 75,000 and more than 285,000 recoveries.\u00a0<em><strong>(Anadolu)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANKARA\u00a0\u2013 Even while doing the right thing by regularly washing your hands to guard against coronavirus, people must take care &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":251534,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[37,54365],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-251533","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","category-instagram","mauthors-anadolu","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/251533","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=251533"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/251533\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":251535,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/251533\/revisions\/251535"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/251534"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=251533"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=251533"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=251533"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
