MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) on Sunday guaranteed that the government\u2019s virtual portal that serves as one-stop source for the latest information about coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is protected from potential hackers.<\/p>\n

Princess Pebbles Duque, director of Bureau of Communications Services, said the PCOO is in close coordination with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to secure the website www.covid19.gov.ph from anyone who will attempt to hack the online portal.<\/p>\n

Duque also ensured that the government is ready to fix any possible technical glitches that might affect the website\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cSa tulong po ng<\/em>\u00a0DICT team,\u00a0sinisigurado po namin sa publiko na<\/em>\u00a024\/7\u00a0po naming binabantayan ang<\/em>\u00a0website\u00a0na ito<\/em>\u00a0(With the help of DICT team, we are assuring the public that the website is being monitored 24\/7),\u201d she said during the \u201cLaging Handa\u201d program aired on state-run PTV-4.<\/p>\n

Duque gave the assurance, after the PCOO launched a virtual portal that contains aggregated news, documents, and videos that the public can find useful as they monitor updates on Covid-19 pandemic in the country.<\/p>\n

Fight fake news<\/strong><\/p>\n

PCOO Assistant Secretary and chief brand integrator Ramon Cualoping III said launching an online portal exclusive for the latest developments related to Covid-19 is one of the government\u2019s ways to fight the proliferation of fake news.<\/p>\n

Cualoping acknowledged that there is now a \u201cchaotic situation on social media,\u201d as some online users tend to propagate fake news about the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

He said the government wants to fight disinformation by providing the public a \u201cverified and vetted\u201d information about the coronavirus disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsa sa pinakaimportanteng parte para mapanatili ang<\/em>\u00a0trust and confidence\u00a0ng bawat isa ay ang<\/em>\u00a0website (We created the website so that we can sustain the public\u2019s trust and confidence),\u201d Cualoping said. \u201cAng gobyerno ay nandito para sa inyo. Ilalahad ang tamang impormasyon<\/em>\u00a0(The government is here for you. We will provide you the right information).\u201d<\/p>\n

Trust your government<\/strong><\/p>\n

The creation of the virtual portal came after President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire Luzon under enhanced community quarantine until April 12 in an effort to contain Covid-19.<\/p>\n

People residing in Luzon are required to observe strict home quarantine and limit their movements to accessing basic needs.<\/p>\n

Since the implementation of Luzon-wide community quarantine, some fake news peddlers have begun spreading false information about the Covid-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n

Duque said the government\u2019s goal was to stop the proliferation of fake news that merely sows confusion among the public.<\/p>\n

\u201cMagsi-silbi po itong gabay o proteksyon para din po sa mga nagkakalat na hindi<\/em>\u00a0valid or invalid information\u00a0po, para ma<\/em>-guide\u00a0ang ating mga kababayan kung ano ang mga totoo<\/em>\u00a0(This virtual portal will guide the public about the truth and protect them against those who are spreading invalid information),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Cualoping likewise appealed to the public to trust the government as it continues to fight Covid-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cSa panahong ito<\/em>\u00a0(In this trying times), you have to trust your government, you have to believe your government. And when you trust and believe the government,\u00a0mas mapapadali po ang trabaho ng lahat, ng<\/em>\u00a0private sector,\u00a0ng<\/em>\u00a0public sector (the private and public sectors can easily fulfill their respective mandates),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
