{"id":248842,"date":"2020-03-18T04:44:12","date_gmt":"2020-03-18T08:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=248842"},"modified":"2020-03-18T04:44:12","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T08:44:12","slug":"employers-barred-from-sacking-workers-during-quarantine-period","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2020\/03\/18\/employers-barred-from-sacking-workers-during-quarantine-period\/","title":{"rendered":"Employers barred from sacking workers during quarantine period"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_248844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-248844\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/business-chairs-company-coworking-7070.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-248844\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/business-chairs-company-coworking-7070.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/business-chairs-company-coworking-7070.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/business-chairs-company-coworking-7070-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/business-chairs-company-coworking-7070-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/business-chairs-company-coworking-7070-1024x678.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-248844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Employers should not require their employees to report for work, unless their company is \u201cengaged in basic necessities or services.\u201d (Pexels photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Employers are not allowed to sack their workers who fail to report for work during the one-month quarantine period in the entire Luzon amid the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The latest directive was included in a bulletin, which was approved by President Rodrigo Duterte, that contains the \u201cbasic do\u2019s and don\u2019ts\u201d during the implementation of Luzon-wide \u201cenhanced\u201d community quarantine from March 17 to April 12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployers should not terminate their employees by reason only of not reporting for work because of the Covid-19 situation,\u201d the bulletin read.<\/p>\n<p>Employers should not require their employees to report for work, unless their company is \u201cengaged in basic necessities or services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the bulletin, employers are encouraged to adopt a work arrangement that will not require \u201cphysically reporting for work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Employers are also prodded to extend financial assistance and grant prorated 13th month pay to their employees.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the rising cases of Covid-19 in the country, Duterte on Monday implemented enhanced community quarantine in the entire Luzon until April 12.<\/p>\n<p>In the Philippines, around 187 people have already been infected with Covid-19, a new strain of virus that was first detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019.<\/p>\n<p>People living in the island of Luzon are required to observe strict home quarantine and limit their movements during the month-long quarantine period.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday night, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said workers cannot be punished because of their failure to go to work amid the Covid-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Bello added that employees may file a complaint against their employers before the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince they are under enhanced community quarantine, then they can really not report. And they will be excused.
