MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 President Rodrigo Duterte has imposed a month-long community quarantine in Metro Manila to stop the possibility that thousands of people might get infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the country, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Placing the whole of Metro Manila under community quarantine from March 15 to April 14 was intended to \u201csave lives,\u201d DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said in an interview with dzMM.<\/p>\n

\u201cMahirap man, masakit man, kailangan po nating gawin para<\/em>\u00a0to save lives \u2018no (It might be difficult for us but we need to do this to save lives),\u201d Malaya said.<\/p>\n

Malaya issued the statement as he bared that the World Health Organization (WHO) cautioned that the number of Covid-19 cases in the Philippines might reach 75,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cKinalampag na tayo ng<\/em>\u00a0WHO na kung hindi raw tayo gagawa ng<\/em>\u00a0drastic measures…baka umabot tayo sa<\/em>\u00a075,000 cases.\u00a0At iyan, nakikita na natin iyong paggalaw<\/em>\u00a0(WHO warned us that if we fail to take drastic measures, there might be 75,000 cases in the country. And confirmed cases continue to rise). So, I think that\u2019s the reason why the government \u2018no, why the President declared this community quarantine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The community quarantine in Metro Manila took effect on Sunday, restricting the movement of the people to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the country.<\/p>\n

People outside Metro Manila are barred from entering the region, unless they are workers, departing passengers, and individuals aboard vehicles carrying cargoes.<\/p>\n

Metro Manila residents are also required to observe strict social distancing and avoid mass gatherings.<\/p>\n

Stay at home<\/strong><\/p>\n

DILG Secretary Eduardo A\u00f1o advised those living in Metro Manila to \u201cstay at home\u201d as much as possible.<\/p>\n

A\u00f1o said observing \u201cself-quarantine\u201d would be an effective way to stop the further spread of Covid-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cAng gusto nating mangyari, umuwi na lang itong mga tao, mag<\/em>-stay at home (What we want to happen is for people to just stay at home),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPinakamahirap sa lahat \u2018yung hindi mo nakikita \u2018yung virus at hindi mo alam kung sino<\/em>\u00a0infected, lalo na \u2018yung asymptomatic (The challenge is we don\u2019t see the virus and we don\u2019t know who\u2019s infected, especially if the person is asymptomatic).\u201d<\/p>\n

Not an absolute lockdown<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under the memorandum signed by Malaca\u00f1ang on Friday, the government can impose either a \u201cgeneral\u201d or an \u201cenhanced\u201d community quarantine in Metro Manila.<\/p>\n

The local government units are so far directed to impose a \u201cgeneral\u201d community quarantine, which limits people\u2019s movement to \u201caccessing basic necessities and work\u201d and directs uniformed personnel and quarantine personnel to be present at border points.<\/p>\n

Meantime, an \u201cenhanced\u201d community quarantine requires \u201cstrict\u201d home quarantine in all households, suspends transportation, regulates food and essential health services, and heightens uniformed personnel\u2019s present to enforce quarantine procedures.<\/p>\n

A\u00f1o denied that there is an absolute lockdown in Metro Manila, saying that the movement of the people is merely \u201crestricted.<\/p>\n

To date, there are 111 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Philippines.<\/p>\n
