{"id":24775,"date":"2014-09-04T18:56:25","date_gmt":"2014-09-04T10:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=24775"},"modified":"2014-09-04T17:52:01","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T09:52:01","slug":"manitoba-man-pleads-guilty-in-birthday-shooting-sentenced-to-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/09\/04\/manitoba-man-pleads-guilty-in-birthday-shooting-sentenced-to-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Manitoba man pleads guilty in birthday shooting; sentenced to two years"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_18768\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18768\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_180103724.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18768\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_180103724.jpg\" alt=\"ShutterStock image\" width=\"1000\" height=\"745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_180103724.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_180103724-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/shutterstock_180103724-600x447.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ShutterStock image<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>THE PAS, Man.\u2014A Manitoba man has admitted to firing one blast from a shotgun when gang members crashed his 20th birthday party.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Sanderson pleaded guilty in a courtroom in The Pas to criminal negligence causing bodily harm for shooting a man in the arm in July 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Court heard Sanderson wasn\u2019t aiming at anyone when he fired the blast at his home in Grand Rapids.<\/p>\n<p>The Crown dropped a more serious charge of attempted murder.<\/p>\n<p>Sanderson was sentenced to two years in jail as part of his plea bargain.<\/p>\n<p>The Crown cited serious concerns with its case, including several key witnesses who either refused to testify, said they saw nothing or have disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Court was told the party mood turned sour when several people connected to the Indian Posse street gang confronted guests outside Sanderson\u2019s home and flashed gang signs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was lots of monkey business going on,\u201d said Crown attorney Todd Rambow.<\/p>\n<p>The victim who was hit was so badly injured that his arm has been left practically useless, court heard.<\/p>\n<p>Defence lawyer Wendy Martin-White said Sanderson suffers from cognitive issues and felt like his safety was being threatened.<\/p>\n<p>Provincial court Judge Malcolm McDonald told Sanderson to \u201cconsider yourself very lucky\u201d the Crown was forced to cut a deal.<\/p>\n<p>The judge also expressed concern about the prevalence of gangs in communities such as Grand Rapids and the reluctance of people to co-operate with police and justice officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nothing but a recipe for disaster,\u201d said McDonald.<\/p>\n<p>Sanderson has spent more than 13 months in custody without bail, for which he was given time-and-a-half credit.
