MANILA<\/strong> \u2013 Malaca\u00f1ang on Thursday said it has no knowledge of President Rodrigo Duterte\u2019s supposed key role in the selection of Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab as the chairperson of the House appropriations committee.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo issued the statement after Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) claimed Wednesday that Ungab\u2019s removal from his committee post was an \u201cinsult\u201d to Duterte.<\/p>\n

Panelo, however, refused to \u201center into the realm of speculations.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he would ask Duterte if there is truth to HNP\u2019s claim that Ungab was handpicked by the President to lead the House committee on appropriations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not privy to that. We have to ask him,\u201d Panelo said in a Palace press briefing. \u201cThat is to assume na may kinalaman siya dun sa paglalagay sa kanya<\/em> (that Duterte had a hand in placing Ungab as the head of the committee).\u201d<\/p>\n

HNP, the party-list of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, slammed Wednesday the move of House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano to strip Ungab of his lead role at the House appropriations panel.<\/p>\n

In a statement, HNP said Duterte never ordered Ungab\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe (Ungab) was specifically chosen by President Duterte as chairman of the committee and the last time we checked, the President never ordered the removal of Ungab. If anything, the removal was an insult and an affront to the President,\u201d the HNP said.<\/p>\n

Panelo maintained that Duterte would never intervene in the internal issues of the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President, as I said, will not interfere in the intramurals inside Congress,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ungab was replaced with ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Yap.<\/p>\n

Ungab\u2019s removal from the key post came amid Cayetano\u2019s claim that there was a plan to oust him as House Speaker.<\/p>\n

Cayetano alleged last week that Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco is hatching a plot to unseat him and had been promising committee chairmanships and unsolicited budget allocations to congressmen.<\/p>\n

Velasco, who has an existing term-sharing deal with Cayetano, already denied the allegations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
