(PNA file photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) chairperson Dante Jimenez as the new co-chairperson of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD).<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Duterte signed Jimenez\u2019s appointment paper on February 21, according to the list of new presidential appointees released by Malaca\u00f1ang on Friday.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Jimenez\u2019s appointment as ICAD co-chair came despite Duterte\u2019s previous pronouncement that he would no longer appoint a new drug czar after he fired Vice President Leni Robredo from the post.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Duterte earlier named Robredo as co-chair of ICAD on Oct. 31, 2019, after the latter claimed that the government\u2019s crackdown on illegal drugs is \u201cobviously not working\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Robredo was supposed to help her ICAD co-chair, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Aaron Aquino, in addressing the drug menace in the country until June 30, 2022.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She was, however, fired as drug czar on November 24 last year for failing to present new measures to improve the government\u2019s fight against illegal drugs.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In a statement, Aquino welcomed Jimenez&#8217;s appointment.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;The appointment of Mr. Dante Jimenez as ICAD co-chairman is a welcome development for the illegal drug campaign. Mr. Jimenez, an anti-corruption crusader, will greatly contribute to the illegal drug war of the government since illegal drugs are also linked to corruption. We are looking forward to working with him,&#8221; Aquino said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">ICAD, created through Executive Order 15 signed on March 6, 2017, is tasked to ensure the member-agencies\u2019 implementation of and compliance with all policies, laws, and issuances on the anti-narcotics campaign in an \u201cintegrated and synchronized manner.\u201d<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">ICAD members include the Dangerous Drugs Board; Philippine National Police; National Bureau of Investigation; Armed Forces of the Philippines; Anti-Money Laundering Council; Public Attorney\u2019s Office; Office of the Solicitor General; Philippine Coast Guard; Technical Education and Skills Development Authority; and Philippine Information Agency.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Other members of the anti-drug body are the Departments of the Interior and Local Government, Justice, Health, Education, Social Welfare, Trade, Agriculture, and Defense; and the bureaus of Customs and Immigration.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In November 2019, Jimenez bared that the PACC requested Duterte to tap his office as a new ICAD member to further boost the government\u2019s anti-narcotics drive.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong>Other appointees<\/strong><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Meanwhile, Duterte also named Enrique Manalo as the Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations (UN).<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Manalo\u2019s new post was first offered to Rodolfo Robles, but the latter\u2019s nomination was deferred by the Commission on Appointments after being grilled on several issues, including the country\u2019s arbitral award over the South China Sea dispute.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Duterte tapped Robles as the Philippines\u2019 ambassador to Canada.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Manalo and Robles\u2019 appointment papers were signed by Duterte on February 11 and 21, respectively.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Duterte on February 11 also named Rex Anthony Villegas as board member of the Philippine National Oil Company Renewables Corporation (PNOC-RC).<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">PNOC-RC is the government\u2019s primary vehicle in promoting, developing and implementing renewable energy and energy efficiency programs in the country.<em><strong>\u00a0(with reports from Christopher Lloyd Caliwan\/PNA)<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0\u2014 President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) chairperson Dante Jimenez as the new co-chairperson of the Inter-Agency &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":246524,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-246523","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-ruth-abbey-gita-carlos","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/246523","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=246523"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/246523\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":246526,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/246523\/revisions\/246526"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/246524"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=246523"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=246523"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=246523"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
