MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte will not intervene in the internal affairs of the House of Representatives, Malaca\u00f1ang said on Thursday, amid a claim that there is supposed ouster plot against House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Duterte would only make a move, in the event that House lawmakers ask him to \u201cintercede in their behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, the President does not interfere.\u00a0Paulit-ulit na nating sinasabi iyan<\/em>\u00a0(We\u2019re repeatedly saying that). That\u2019s the internal affair of the Congress.\u00a0Hindi siya makikialam diyan<\/em>\u00a0(He will not interfere), unless you ask him to settle whatever rift they have if there is any,\u201d he told Palace reporters.<\/p>\n

Panelo\u2019s statement came after Cayetano claimed earlier Thursday that he received “verified” information that Marinduque Rep. Lord Alan Velasco is hatching a plot to unseat him as House Speaker.<\/p>\n

Cayetano\u2019s allegation came, despite the term-sharing deal between him and Velasco that Duterte had brokered on July 22, 2019.<\/p>\n

Velasco, in a separate interview earlier Thursday, denied that he was behind the supposed ouster plot against Cayetano.<\/p>\n

Panelo said Cayetano\u2019s claim could be just a \u201cperception\u201d of the House leader.<\/p>\n

He added that it appears that Cayetano is challenging congressmen who are opposed to his \u201cstyle of leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAng tingin ko kay<\/em>\u00a0(What I think about) Congressman Cayetano, he was more challenging members of the Congress. If they\u2019re not satisfied with me,\u00a0eh \u2018di gawin niyo ang gusto niyo<\/em>\u00a0(then do what you want).\u00a0Parang ganoon ang dating sa akin nu\u2019ng<\/em>\u00a0statement\u00a0niya<\/em>\u00a0(That\u2019s how I interpret his statement),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Panelo, however, believed that members of the House of Representatives are \u201csatisfied\u201d with Cayetano\u2019s work performance.<\/p>\n

Duterte would just let House lawmakers address the supposed move to remove Cayetano from office, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWalang<\/em>\u00a0advice\u00a0ang<\/em>\u00a0Pangulo. Kung ano ang pinagkasunduan nila, eh \u2018di sila ang dapat mag-<\/em>resolve\u00a0noon<\/em>\u00a0(There is no advice from the President. They should resolve it on their own),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

There has been an existing term-sharing agreement between Cayetano and Velasco.<\/p>\n

Under the term sharing deal, Cayetano would serve as House Speaker until October 2020 while Velasco would take over and serve until the 18th Congress ends in 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
