Tom Olsen (@TomOlsenXIX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomOlsenXIX\/status\/1227715416153346048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CALGARY \u2014 The head of Alberta&#8217;s $30-million-a-year energy war room apologized after the organization attacked The New York Times in a series of tweets over an article about how large financial institutions have stopped funding Alberta oil production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI apologize from some of the tweets\u201d in The Canadian Energy Centre&#8217;s Twitter thread Wednesday morning, posted Tom Olsen, the CEC&#8217;s chief executive, to his personal Twitter account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tone did not meet CEC&#8217;s standard for public discourse,\u201d he said, adding it has been dealt with internally.<\/p>\n<p>A 20-tweet thread posted by the CEC earlier in the day responded to an article by The Times on how these companies \u201chave stopped putting their money behind oil production in the Canadian province of Alberta, home to one of the world&#8217;s most extensive, and also dirtiest, oil reserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CEC tweets said The Times has been \u201ccalled out for anti-Semitism countless times,\u201d has a \u201cvery dodgy\u201d track record, is \u201croutinely accused of bias\u201d and is \u201cnot the most dependable source.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four of the tweets were later deleted.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining tweets take issue with the news agency&#8217;s interpretation of the data, and defend the environmental record of Canada and the oil and gas sector, but don&#8217;t directly attack the newspaper&#8217;s credibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn&#8217;t surprise us the reporting isn&#8217;t great, but at least there is some context for folks to consider,\u201d the thread ends.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times is \u201cconfident in the accuracy of our reporting,\u201d wrote spokeswoman Ari Isaacman Bevacqua.<\/p>\n<p>Olsen said that \u201cthere will be a substantive response\u201d to the article within the centre&#8217;s \u201cmandate of challenging inaccuracies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Premier Jason Kenney promised in last year&#8217;s provincial election that the centre would have a mandate to promote the energy industry and fire back in real time against what the United Conservative government deems to be misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>The centre has been criticized previously for using another organization&#8217;s trademarked logo and for having its staff members refer to themselves as reporters instead of government employees.<\/p>\n<p>Olsen has been mocked by critics for a slip of the tongue in a TV interview in which he said the purpose of the centre is about \u201cdisproving true facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Calgary-based centre has been set up as a provincial government corporation, but is overseen by three cabinet ministers on its board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I apologize for some of the tweets in @CDNEnergyCentre Twitter thread this amThe tone did not meet CEC&#39;s standard for &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":244769,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-244768","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244768","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=244768"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244768\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":244770,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244768\/revisions\/244770"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/244769"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=244768"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=244768"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=244768"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
