KING RODRIGUEZ\/PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to transmit the Philippines\u2019 formal notification to the United States (US) with regard to its termination of the 22-year-old Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), Malaca\u00f1ang announced on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The President\u2019s order came a day after Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. warned that the revocation of the VFA might have a \u201cnegative\u201d impact on the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPRRD (President Rodrigo Roa Duterte) is instructing (Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea to tell (Locsin) to send the notice of termination to the US government,\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Inked by the Philippines and the US on Feb. 10, 1998, the VFA serves as an agreement that stipulates how American forces should be treated in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement exempts US troops from passport and visa regulations, and also allows them to use their permits and licenses in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>Washington also retains jurisdiction over US military personnel accused of committing crimes in the Philippines, unless the offenses are punishable in the host country.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte\u2019s termination of VFA was in retaliation for US senators&#8217; interference in the case of Senator Leila de Lima who is currently detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center at Camp Crame in Quezon City due to her involvement in illegal drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Panelo said the President is also scheduled to have a phone call with US President Donald Trump \u201canytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He, however, did not mention the possible issues that might be discussed between Duterte and Trump.<\/p>\n<p>On January 30, Panelo said terminating the VFA is a \u201cstudied\u201d and \u201ctactical\u201d decision.<\/p>\n<p>Panelo also said Duterte had no choice but scrap the VFA because of the \u201cbrazen interference\u201d and \u201cdisrespect\u201d of the US Senate for the Philippines\u2019 judicial system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0\u2014 President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to transmit the Philippines\u2019 formal notification to the &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":242162,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1145,16,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-244328","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headline","category-news","category-news-ph","mauthors-ruth-abbey-gita-carlos","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244328","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=244328"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244328\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":244329,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244328\/revisions\/244329"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/242162"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=244328"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=244328"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=244328"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
