(File <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LeninMorenoEC\/photos\/a.402604756565654\/1342503142575806\/?type=3&amp;theater\">photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LeninMorenoEC\/\">Len\u00edn Moreno\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>QUITO, Ecuador \u2014 Ecuador&#8217;s President Lenin Moreno has scrambled to apologize for comments suggesting women tend to complain about sexual harassment when it comes from ugly people.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech to investors Friday in the port city of Guayaquil, Moreno said men were under threat of being denounced for harassment and added, \u201cat times, with harassment, they torment ugly people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is to say, that the harassment is when it comes from an ugly person,\u201d he added. \u201cBut if the person looks good according to the standards, they tend not to think necessarily that it is harassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That prompted immediate outrage from women&#8217;s rights activists and others.<\/p>\n<p>Governing party congresswoman Soleda Buendia complained on Twitter that Moreno \u201cjustifies and reproduces violence against women. You can&#8217;t joke about harassmant, rape, femicide, trafficking, sexual exploitation&#8230;. Nothing justifies expressions that revictimize us!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Women for Change organization joined in: \u201cIt is not that everything now looks to women like harassment, it is that to machos like you it has never seemed bad to harass!\u201d the group tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>Moreno then tried to apologize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my comment about harassment, I did not intend to minimize such a grave topic as violence or abuses,\u201d he tweeted. \u201cI apologize if it was understood that way.
