MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 President Rodrigo Duterte\u2019s economic team is competent enough to push for programs and policies that would lift more Filipinos out of poverty, Malaca\u00f1ang said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

In an interview with dzIQ, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the Palace was confident that the country\u2019s economic managers can introduce anti-poverty measures aimed at helping poor Filipino families.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarami na ring krisis na dumaan pero magaling ang<\/em>\u00a0economic managers\u00a0natin. So siguro, alam na nila ang kanilang gagawin<\/em>\u00a0(We have experienced many crises but our economic managers are competent. Perhaps, they know what to do),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Panelo issued the statement after Social Weather Stations\u2019 (SWS) Dec. 13 to 16 poll revealed that the number of Filipino households who consider themselves poor in the past three months rose to 13.4 million or 54 percent from the 10.<\/p>\n

3 million or 42 percent registered in September 2019.<\/p>\n

SWS noted that the latest number of poor Filipino families was the \u201chighest\u201d since the 55 percent posted in September 2014.<\/p>\n

Panelo downplayed the poll results, stressing that poverty incidence tends to fluctuate from time to time.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Yung<\/em>\u00a0survey\u00a0natin di ba<\/em>\u00a0there was a time\u00a0na umakyat, meron naman<\/em>\u00a0time\u00a0na bumababa so talagang nagfa<\/em>-fluctuate\u00a0ang sentimiyento ng mga tao, depende sa kalakaran na nakakabalot sa kanila<\/em>\u00a0(There was a time that survey results are either relatively high or low. So the public sentiments really fluctuate, depending on the situation),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The current administration is targeting reducing poverty incidence to 14 percent by the end of Duterte\u2019s term in 2022.<\/p>\n

The Palace official, nevertheless, expressed confidence that poverty rate would go down, in the event that the government implements new projects that would create more job opportunities for Filipinos.<\/p>\n

In December 2019, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said it is \u201cpossible and quite reasonable\u201d that poverty rate would further drop to \u201c10 to 12 percent\u201d by 2022.<\/p>\n

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar also guaranteed in December last year that the government\u2019s programs will further give \u201cbeneficial gains and advantages\u201d to Filipinos this year.<\/p>\n
