(File <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/armedforcesofthephilippines\/photos\/pcb.10157681721043766\/10157681720398766\/?type=3&amp;theater\">photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/armedforcesofthephilippines\/\">Armed Forces of the Philippines\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; Amid the plan to revive peace negotiations, Malaca\u00f1ang on Sunday appealed to the Communist Party of the Philippines\u2019 (CPP) armed wing, the New People\u2019s Army (NPA), to honor the ceasefire deal with the government troops.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said President Rodrigo Duterte has decided to ignore the recent attacks waged by the NPA rebels despite the implementation of holiday truce for the sake of the planned resumption of talks between the state peace negotiators and members of the CPP\u2019s political arm, the National Democratic Front (NDF).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever the reason is,\u00a0<em>pinagbigyan sila ni Presidente kaya huwag na lang nilang uulitin<\/em>\u00a0(the President gave them another chance so they should avoid the repeat of attacks against government forces),\u201d Panelo said in an interview with dzIQ.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPinapabayaan na lang ni Presidente yun. Tuloy pa rin yung<\/em>\u00a0(The President is letting that pass. There\u2019s still a plan to resume the peace talks),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The holiday ceasefire between the state forces and the NPA insurgents took effect on Dec. 23 and will expire at 11:59 p.m. of Jan. 7, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>While the truce was implemented ahead of the planned resumption of formal peace talks, there have been reported attacks by suspected NPA members against military and police personnel in Labo, Camarines Norte; Tubungan, Iloilo; and Quezon province on the first day of the implementation of the temporary ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>A soldier was killed and six others were wounded in the attack in Camarines Norte; two cops were wounded in Iloilo; while no government troops were hurt in Quezon, Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson, Marine Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo earlier reported.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte has decided to hold a one-on-one meeting with CPP founder Jose Maria Sison in the Philippines following the series of attacks launched by NPA members during the holiday truce.<\/p>\n<p>Sison, Duterte\u2019s former professor, has been in self-exile in The Netherlands since 1987.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Panelo said the Chief Executive is still eager to meet Sison before the formal revival of talks.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAng gusto ni Presidente, pumunta siya<\/em>\u00a0(Sison)\u00a0<em>dito sa Pilipinas, mag-usap sila,<\/em>\u00a0one-on-one.\u00a0<em>Kung hindi siya pupunta dito, ibig sabihin takot siya at hindi siya matapat sa kanyang mga salita<\/em>\u00a0(What the President wants is they hold a one-on-one meeting here in the Philippines.
