Grazio\/Flickr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-nd\/2.0\/\">CC BY-NC-ND 2.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; A majority of Filipinos have expressed worry over the growing number of Chinese workers in the country, the results of the Social Weather Stations\u2019 (SWS) September poll revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The SWS survey, conducted from September 27 to 30, found that 70 percent of adult Filipinos were \u201cworried\u201d about the surge of Chinese nationals working in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>The respondents were asked: \u201cHow worried are you about the increasing number of foreign Chinese working here in the Philippines?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the 70 percent, 31 percent were \u201cworried a great deal\u201d, while 39 percent were \u201csomewhat worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 19 percent told SWS that they were \u201cnot too worried\u201d and the remaining 11 percent said they were \u201cnot at all worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Immigration has estimated that 3.12 million Chinese nationals have entered the country from January 2016 to May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>From 2016 to 2018, about 335,800 working visas and special permits were issued to Chinese nationals.<\/p>\n<p>The influx of Chinese citizens visiting and seeking jobs in the country was observed since President Rodrigo Duterte sought friendly and improved ties with China upon assuming office in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Some 12 percent of Filipinos believed that \u201cvery many\u201d Chinese nationals were working in their locality, 19 percent said there were \u201csomewhat many\u201d, 25 percent think there were a \u201cfew\u201d, and the remaining 44 percent were convinced that there were \u201calmost none\u201d, the SWS survey noted.<\/p>\n<p>Visibility of Chinese workers was highest in Metro Manila (43 percent), followed by the Visayas (37 percent), Balance Luzon (28 percent), and Mindanao (19 percent).<\/p>\n<p>Filipinos who raised worry over Chinese workers\u2019 presence in the country was also highest in Metro Manila (75 percent), followed by the Visayas (71 percent), Balance Luzon (28 percent), and Mindanao (67 percent).<\/p>\n<p>The poll also bared that 27 percent \u201cstrongly agree\u201d and 25 percent \u201csomewhat agree\u201d that the rising number of Chinese workers in the Philippines is \u201ca threat to the country\u2019s overall security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen percent, however, \u201csomewhat disagree\u201d, 13 percent \u201cstrongly disagree\u201d, and 21 percent were \u201cundecided\u201d, SWS said.<\/p>\n<p>The Filipinos\u2019 stance that the influx of Chinese nationals working in the country is a threat to national security yielded a net agreement of \u201cvery strong\u201d +38 in Metro Manila, and \u201cmoderately strong\u201d in Balance Luzon (+27), Mindanao (+21), and the Visayas (+15).<\/p>\n<p>On July 31, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. viewed the surge of Chinese nationals in the country as a \u201csecurity threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SWS used sampling error margins of \u00b12.3 percentage points for national percent for national percentages, \u00b14 percentage points each for Balance Luzon, and \u00b16 percentage points each for Metro Manila and the Visayas when it interviewed 1,800 adult Filipinos.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0&#8212;
