MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— The organizing committee of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games should ensure that other arriving athletes are not inconvenienced or they will be held accountable, Malaca\u00f1ang said.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made this warning after some international football teams aired concerns over logistics upon arriving in the country for their respective competitions.<\/p>\n

The football teams of Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Cambodia, and Thailand vented frustrations over issues concerning transportation, lodging, and training upon their arrival in Manila.<\/p>\n

Panelo said no heads will roll in the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc), but a repeat of the mistakes will be dealt with accordingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure they will do better in the next succeeding arrival of the other countries\u2019 delegates and athletes.\u00a0Dapat kasi kumbaga<\/em>\u00a0you will learn from your mistakes,\u201d Panelo said in an interview in Busan, South Korea on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf not,\u00a0siguro kailangan<\/em>\u00a0accountable\u00a0sila doon<\/em>\u00a0(they must be held accountable there). Pero (But) I don\u2019t think so,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Panelo apologized anew for the seemingly ill-preparedness of this year\u2019s SEA Games but explained that these logistical problems were \u201cunintentional.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Office of the President is giving no excuses and as host country we\u2019re apologizing for the inconvenience suffered by the athlete,\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as we said, this kind of incidents, given the number of countries participating and the athletes coming here could not be avoided. There will be delays in the transport and the checking in, there will be some miscommunications. Those are never intentional,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Despite logistical problems, Panelo said there were no reports of any incident jeopardizing the athletes\u2019 safety and health.<\/p>\n

The Palace official, meanwhile, offered suggestions to the Phisgoc to avoid repeat of blunders.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike for instance,\u00a0kung ako yun<\/em>\u00a0(If I were) in the position of the organizers,\u00a0di maka<\/em>-check in sa hotel, e di chineck in ko sa ibang hotel muna. Kadali lang naman gawan ng paraan ‘yun (and athletes would not be able to check in their hotel, I would check them in another hotel. That\u2019s easy to resolve),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCreativity\u00a0lang\u2019yun. \u2018Dun siguro sila nagkulang pero baka nataranta lang<\/em>\u00a0(All they need is creativity. That\u2019s where they lack but perhaps they merely panicked),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Panelo assured that the organizers would do better next time.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Phisgoc acknowledged the mistakes and apologized for the inconvenience the athletes had experienced.<\/p>\n

Phisgoc, led by House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, vowed to \u201cdo better\u201d by ensuring \u201cproper coordination of the arrival details, airport welcome and transportation provisions of all international teams to their respective assigned hotels.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
