MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Monday said it might be pointless for the Philippines to ask for assistance from the United Nations and the United States in the fight against illegal drugs since they don\u2019t know the drug problem in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cKasi, ano ang matututunan natin doon? Hindi nila alam ang problema sa Pilipinas<\/em>\u00a0(What could we learn from them? They don\u2019t know the problems in the Philippines),\u201d Sotto told reporters when asked about Vice President Leni Robredo\u2019s plan to meet with US embassy and UN officials to discuss the government\u2019s war on drugs.<\/p>\n

Sotto said the US has its own Drug Control Policy Program where some strategies are patterned on the UN strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as of now, the strategies of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime are not yet quite clear,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said it would be better for agencies and groups not involved with the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD) not to meddle with the agency\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

\u201cHindi naman nila alam yung mga function ng<\/em>\u00a0ICAD.\u00a0Ano yung pakialam ng<\/em>\u00a0UN\u00a0doon<\/em>\u00a0(They don\u2019t know anything about the functions of ICAD. What has the UN got to do with it)?\u201d Sotto said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps what the Vice President means is research. But as far as running the anti-illegal drugs and drug abuse program of the country, I don\u2019t think we will learn from those groups,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Senate leader, however, clarified that he is only expressing his personal opinion and has nothing against Robredo\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s her opinion\u2026\u00a0Okay lang, kanya-kanyang<\/em>\u00a0thinking\u00a0yan. Kung sa tingin nila, makakatulong<\/em>, (It\u2019s okay. We have our own thinking. If they think it will help) then go ahead. My personal opinion,\u00a0wala tayong mapapala doon<\/em>\u00a0(we won\u2019t get anything from it),\u201d Sotto said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
