MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— President Rodrigo Duterte is taking his time in selecting who he will appoint as the next Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Malaca\u00f1ang said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Lt. Gen. Archie Franciso Gamboa was designated as PNP officer-in-charge after PNP chief, Gen. Oscar Albayalde resigned from his post amid allegations on his involvement in the recycling of illegal drugs.<\/p>\n

However, PNP spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac said Gamboa\u2019s powers are limited since he could not approve the disbursement of funds for projects and procurement of equipment.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the President should not be rushed into choosing a new PNP chief because it is his job to review the selection thoroughly.<\/p>\n

\u201cGanyan talaga. Ang isang Pangulo bago mag-<\/em>appoint,\u00a0pinag-iisipan maigi<\/em>\u00a0(That\u2019s really how it is. A President, before he appoints someone, has to think it over thoroughly),\u201d Panelo said in an interview over dzIQ.<\/p>\n

Panelo, meanwhile, praised Gamboa for doing a good job as PNP officer-in-charge.<\/p>\n

\u201cKahit wala pang permanente meron namang<\/em>\u00a0OIC\u00a0at magaling yung<\/em>\u00a0OIC (Even if there is no permanent PNP chief, there is an OIC and the OIC who is doing good),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

He said the PNP should allow the President to decide on who will take over the leadership of national police.<\/p>\n

\u201cHayaan natin si Presidente, wag natin pangunahan ang kaniyang desisyon<\/em>\u00a0(Let\u2019s let the President decide, let\u2019s not preempt his decision),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Currently, Gamboa is one of the top candidates to replace Albayalde as PNP chief.<\/p>\n

The others are Lt. Gen. Camilo Cascolan, deputy chief for operations and Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, former Metro Manila police director and now heads the directorial staff.<\/p>\n

Late last month, Duterte admitted that he is having difficulty in selecting an \u201cappropriate guy\u201d who will take over as new PNP chief.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a —\u00a0hindi naman<\/em>\u00a0(not really) messy, but it\u2019s very hard to — at this time to choose a candidate\u00a0na<\/em>\u00a0who would really\u2026 The appropriate guy.\u00a0Mahirap eh<\/em>\u00a0(It\u2019s difficult),\u201d Duterte said in a media interview in Malaca\u00f1ang.<\/p>\n
