{"id":23621,"date":"2014-08-26T23:31:53","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T15:31:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=23621"},"modified":"2014-08-26T23:31:53","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T15:31:53","slug":"comelec-focused-to-register-9-6-m-voters-under-biometrics-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/08\/26\/comelec-focused-to-register-9-6-m-voters-under-biometrics-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Comelec focused to register 9.6-M voters under biometrics system"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_11998\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11998\" style=\"width: 417px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/comelec.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11998\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/comelec.png\" alt=\"Wikipedia Photo\" width=\"417\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/comelec.png 417w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/comelec-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/comelec-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wikipedia Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA \u2013 Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes said on Tuesday the commission is determined to register all the remaining 9.6 million voters under the biometrics system in preparation for the 2016 elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dOur drive is focus toward the 9.6 million who are not yet registered under biometrics,\u201d Brillantes said during the Senate hearing on the Comelec\u2019s proposed Php 16.9- billion budget for 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Brillantes emphasized that biometrics data of voters is mandatory beginning in the 2016 national and local elections even as he advised voters to update their records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dYou cannot vote in 2016 unless you are under the biometrics registration system,\u201d Brillantes said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the biometrics registration started last May 6 and will end in October next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to validate your record and let your biometrics be recorded properly for you to exercise your right of suffrage come 2016 elections,\u201d Brillantes said.<\/p>\n<p>The Comelec has allotted Php 120.3 million budget for this year\u2019s continuing registration but its proposed Php 231.5-million budget for 2015 has been removed by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).<\/p>\n<p>DBM Assistant Director Mary Anne dela Vega explained that the budget has been removed because continuing registration is part of the Comelec\u2019s regular operations and mandates.<\/p>\n<p>Dela Vega further explained the Comelec can use funds for continuing registration as well as overseas voters registration, recalls and even plebiscites from the Php 1.58-billion budget for operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt is not locally funded projects but regular operations and mandates which is under the Php 1.5-billion budget,\u201d Dela Vega said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, President Benigno S.
