MANILA\u00a0\u2013 The \u201ccomplex problem\u201d of security risks in the Philippine waters will not cease unless the government can address its \u201croots and causes,\u201d according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).<\/p>\n

During the National Marine Summit 2019 at the Manila Hotel on Tuesday (Oct. 29), PCG deputy commandant for operations Vice Admiral Leopoldo Laroya said the Philippines, as an archipelagic country that relies heavily on its marine resources, should make sure that its maritime jurisdictions are \u201csafeguarded\u201d.<\/p>\n

He made the call, as he noted that the country is facing \u201cmany security challenges\u201d in its maritime domain.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are bombarded with so many problems as far as maritime interests are concerned,\u201d Laroya said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe complex problem of traditional and non-traditional threats will continue until the roots and causes are addressed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The PCG official then cited the security threats that are besetting the Philippine waters.<\/p>\n

He noted that the Philippine Rise, a 13-million hectare undersea region that lies east of Luzon, is confronted with \u201cgas exploitations\u201d and \u201cillegal, unreported and unregulated fishing\u201d.<\/p>\n

The West Philippine Sea, on the other hand, faces challenges on \u201cterritorial claims, the militarization of disputed islands, reclamation activities by China to create artificial islands, unregulated fishing and marine ecological destruction,\u201d Laroya emphasized.<\/p>\n

He also cited that southwest Mindanao is challenged by \u201cmaritime terrorism, kidnapping at sea, transnational crimes, human trafficking and smuggling of goods, as well as territorial claims\u201d.<\/p>\n

He further said that the maritime area southeast of the Philippine archipelago deals with \u201cthreats of terrorism, transnational crime, human trafficking, piracy, and illegal fishing\u201d.<\/p>\n

Laroya, nevertheless, ensured that the PCG would exhaust all means to pursue a \u201csafe, clean and secure maritime environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

To address the problems, Laroya said \u201csustained vigilance and strict monitoring efforts\u201d must be observed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaintenance and promotion of maritime security in the country\u2019s maritime jurisdiction cannot be solved by a single agency. Partnership with other counterparts is of vital significance,\u201d Laroya said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
