(<a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/guerrera\/399202605\/in\/photolist-Bh22x-5yeiQA-fqv6q-fdzjuF-cFMMc-2dPDpBe-7YtmmQ-2wi4h-9H8Sjr-3HnTqH-5WEsHX-5WJGEm-8Rg5AT-EGjq1W-dnCtKa-6rDfx6-FGhmA-7HTLU3-fqv4n-fqwQr-2XZ1H3-8tEzT4-mWQeMo-3hYwBX-fqwyK-fqwYe-bxXrMt-fquMj-7tVaRz-fquVy-fqutL-fqvZL-fqwid-BPYc2f-fqvvx-fqw9n-fqvmb-fqv1z-fqujk-fqucD-ixQRH-qhZ9-8FFFaA-2xNwjj-E1WGq-o7PDKE-qa2ZA5-7QtN3V-92wWae-5u3GwE\">File Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/guerrera\/\">guerrera\/Flickr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-nd\/2.0\/\">CC BY-NC-ND 2.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) chief Hermenegildo Serafica on Friday vowed to look after the welfare of sugar farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs SRA Administrator, I will always look after the mandate of SRA, and as someone who was born and raised in the sugarcane industry, I will always look after the good of the industry particularly its farmers from which I am a part of,\u201d Serafica said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSRA is mandated to maintain a balance between sugar supply and demand that will ensure a price that is profitable to producers and fair to consumers,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 1, 2018, the SRA issued Sugar Order (SO) No. 2 which allowed the release of 150,000 metric tons (MT), and an additional 138,600 MT of imported sugar in the domestic market.<\/p>\n<p>SRA issued the SO to ensure stable supply of the commodity and stabilize prices in the market due to the projected increase in the demand for raw and refined sugar, coupled with the low production of domestic sugar especially during the off season.<\/p>\n<p>Serafica stressed that the SRA will only \u201clook into importation only when there is a need to augment the supply and this will always be studied thoroughly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mechanism, volume and timing are important factors to consider in any importation and will undergo exhaustive consultations with industry stakeholders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Serafica\u2019s statement came a day after the United Sugar Producers\u2019 Federation of the Philippines Inc.
