MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— Despite glitches in three of the country\u2019s train systems, Malaca\u00f1ang on Tuesday said it does not consider this a \u201cmass transport crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made this comment as he rebutted Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Secretary-General Renato Reyes\u2019s claim that Metro Manila is facing a mass transport crisis after the Light Rail Transit-1, 2, and the Metro Rail Transit-3 all experienced technical issues that disrupted operations.<\/p>\n

Reyes said \u201cthe most serious situation\u201d now is repairs in the LRT-2 Santolan to Anonas stations which will require around nine months.<\/p>\n

Panelo said he did not consider these glitches as a \u201cmass transport crisis\u201d since there were still other ways for commuters to get rides to take them to their destinations.<\/p>\n

Nakakasakay naman tayo lahat<\/em>\u00a0(What do they mean my transportation crisis? What I see is traffic not transportation crisis. We have transportation. People can still get rides),\u201d Panelo said in a Palace briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cMukha namang wala pa kasi nga makakarating pa naman \u2018yung mga dapat makarating sa kanilang pupuntah<\/em>an (I don\u2019t think there is, because people can still reach their destinations),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Panelo said compared to the previous administration, \u201cbig improvements\u201d have been made in the country\u2019s train systems and glitches have lessened.<\/p>\n

\u201cNabasa ko \u2018yung paliwanag, dati-dati daw halos araw-araw nagba-<\/em>bog down.\u00a0Ngayon daw<\/em>\u00a0once a week\u00a0na lang<\/em>. So,\u00a0ang laki daw ng<\/em>\u00a0improvement (I read an explanation, before the trains bog down almost every day. Now, it\u2019s just once a week),\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

The Palace official said commuters, who want to arrive at their destination early, should also learn to leave their homes \u201cearlier\u201d.<\/p>\n

Address glitches<\/strong><\/p>\n

Panelo admitted that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and LRT and MRT management should address the glitches encountered by the train systems.<\/p>\n

He, however, refused to answer whether or not he thought the nine-month period to fix the LRT-2 stations was too long and deferred it to transport authorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere should be improvement in the LRT.<\/p>\n

As I\u2019ve said, if the problem is on the kind of transport we have, then there is a solution to that. You change the mean of transportation itself or if there is a problem on the operation with respect to its spare parts,\u00a0hindi rin problema \u2018yun; madali ring gawan ng paraan<\/em>\u00a0(that\u2019s not a problem; it\u2019s easy to find a solution),\u201d Panelo added.<\/p>\n

Panelo said transport authorities should take the blame if they cannot properly maintain the country\u2019s train systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot understand why they cannot do that. If they cannot do that, then there\u2019s something wrong with management,\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Panelo said it is the call of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFB) whether or not to expedite the release of franchises and routes for the modernization of jeepneys.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere must be a reason why there is a delay,\u00a0kung may<\/em>\u00a0(if there is a) delay man. It should be competent to know whether or not it has to grant franchises to help ease the problem on transport,\u201d Panelo said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
