(Shutterstock Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>FREDERICTON \u2014 Jury selection will continue Tuesday in the hearing to determine if Matthew Raymond \u2014 accused of killing four people in a shooting spree in Fredericton in August 2018 \u2014 is fit to stand trial.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Fred Ferguson of the New Brunswick Court of Queen&#8217;s Bench ruled earlier this month that the threshold to question fitness of the accused had been met.<\/p>\n<p>Fitness means that an accused understands the charges against them and can instruct a lawyer on how they wish to be defended.<\/p>\n<p>Jury selection for Raymond&#8217;s fitness hearing began in a hockey arena because of the large number of potential jurors.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people lined up outside the venue Monday morning, waiting to pass through security and be registered.<\/p>\n<p>A makeshift courtroom was set up in the rink, with a desk and chair for the judge on a raised platform at what would normally be centre ice.<\/p>\n<p>The second phase of jury selection will begin Tuesday morning at the Fredericton courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond is charged with the first-degree murders of Fredericton police constables Sara Burns and Robb Costello and civilians Donnie Robichaud and Bobbie Lee Wright.<\/p>\n<p>Robichaud and Wright were killed in the parking lot outside their apartment building, and the officers were killed when they responded to the shootings.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond wore orange pants and an orange shirt and appeared unshaven as he was led into a separate pre-trial hearing with the judge and lawyers Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>That hearing to discuss pre-trial issues was held in a dressing room normally used by members of the Fredericton Red Wings of the Maritime Hockey League.<\/p>\n<p>A publication ban was placed on anything said at the proceeding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FREDERICTON \u2014 Jury selection will continue Tuesday in the hearing to determine if Matthew Raymond \u2014 accused of killing four &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":207069,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-233032","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","mauthors-kevin-bissett","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/233032","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=233032"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/233032\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":233033,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/233032\/revisions\/233033"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/207069"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=233032"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=233032"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=233032"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
