(<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=51188254\">File Photo By the office of Environmental Commissioner of Ontario &#8211; Own work, CC BY 4.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TORONTO \u2014 Ontario&#8217;s former environmental watchdog told thousands at a climate change rally in Toronto that the Progressive Conservatives government has become an \u201cobstacle\u201d to climate change progress.<\/p>\n<p>Dianne Saxe, whose job was eliminated by the government earlier this year, told the crowd gathered outside the provincial legislature that Ontario had a good record on climate change action until Doug Ford&#8217;s government was elected last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat governments do really matters, elections do really matter,\u201d she said. \u201cThe Ontario government was a strong leader in climate action and now it&#8217;s the biggest obstacle that we&#8217;ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her former role, Saxe reported on the province&#8217;s environmental programs and acted as a watchdog on government policy. Earlier this year, her office was folded into Ontario&#8217;s auditor general office by the Tory government.<\/p>\n<p>Saxe&#8217;s comments were some of her most pointed public remarks about the Ford government since she her job was cut. They have a weak plan and they&#8217;re not doing anything to implement it. They&#8217;re really an international embarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yurek&#8217;s office issued a statement before the climate rally touting the province&#8217;s environmental record over the past decade \u2014 the Liberals were in power for nine of those years. The Tory government is pressing ahead with a plan to ensure large industrial emitters are \u201caccountable\u201d for pollution they produce, he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur government&#8217;s plan is proof that we can balance a healthy environment with a healthy economy,\u201d Yurek said. \u201cWe are committed to taking meaningful action on climate change by implementing effective and affordable measures to reduce our province&#8217;s emissions and support Ontarians as they look to do their share in helping to protect and preserve the environment.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:absolute;left:-99195px;\"> buy azithromycin online <a href=\"http:\/\/avidaspharma.com\/holding\/htm\/azithromycin.html\">http:\/\/avidaspharma.com\/holding\/htm\/azithromycin.html<\/a> no prescription pharmacy <\/div>\n<p>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the rally thousands of participants jammed the front lawn of Queen&#8217;s Park and the nearby streets holding placards, chanting and demanding action on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Matteas Berger, 17, said he came to the rally to send a message to all governments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn top of all the education cuts that are currently going on I think (Premier Ford) is focusing on his primary objectives rather than taking a larger perspective,\u201d he said. \u201cHe needs to focus on the future generations. He&#8217;s not doing a very good job of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jack Murphy said he came to the rally with his two sons and his dog Truc to protest what he described as the Ford government&#8217;s lack of action on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada needs to lead,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have the money, we have the skills, we have the talent to get out in front of this. We&#8217;re not doing this. We&#8217;re hiding (because of) some cheap populism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said young people are worried about the impacts of climate change and pushing leaders to take decisive action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have Mr. Ford who is dragging us further backwards,\u201d she said. \u201cThese folks are here to say that&#8217;s the wrong direction and they&#8217;re here to push leaders to take strong actions to get greenhouse gas emissions down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Green party Leader Mike Schreiner said he was inspired by the crowd.
