Rod Coneybeare was the puppeteer behind Jerome the Giraffe and Rusty the Rooster, often at the same time, on the beloved CBC children's show The Friendly Giant. \u2022 Coneybeare died last week in Lindsay, Ont., at the age of 89. \u2022 The set of The Friendly Giant was constructed so that Coneybeare could play Rusty with his left hand (and a falsetto voice) and Jerome with his right. \u2022 The show\u2019s scripts were often one-page outlines, with Coneybeare ad libbing the dialogue with Bob Homme, who played the titular giant. \u2022 Coneybeare had a 30-year career at the CBC, hosting, producing and appearing on a variety of shows. \u2022 The Friendly Giant aired on CBC from 1958 until 1985, but at that time he worked on CBC Radio, as well, including on The Rod and Charles Show, the comedy-quiz show Yes, You're Wrong and the sketch-based satire Bananas. \u2022 Coneybeare is survived by his wife Moira, four children and seven grandchildren. \u2022 For this story and more, head to the link in our bio. \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 (Photos: CBC) #friendlygiant #cbc #puppetry #puppets #childrenstv #obit<\/a><\/p>\n
